I bought the TR 1, 2 & 3 package last winter, but didn't get around to trying it until recently (I had previously tried 1 and 3 back in the 90s, 1 on a Mac running OS7, 3 on Win95). Thoroughly frustrated with TR3 at this point, but probably too late to get a refund. Here are the probs:

1. There does not appear to be a command to quit the game (which seems common to all three games) other than CTRL+ALT+DEL. For some reason, left square bracket seems to quit TR3 but may actually be causing a CTD (don't know why anyone would choose that key as a default, or why it should be causing a crash if it doesn't do anything). And that leads to...

2. Getting the game to quit by various methods (see above, plus ALT+F4, right clicking on taskbar icon and closing window or killing the exe from Task Manager) appears to break the install. Trying to launch again gives much black screen and the error "Tomb Raider 3 failed to initialize. Run Setup again." Running setup, it appears that my graphics settings have been wiped, and once the game loads successfully, my custom key mapping has also been wiped. Which means resetting all those values every time I play.

3. Can't find it now, but I thought there was mention in the manual and the tutorial about "sidestepping" or strafing, but there do not appear to be any controls mapped for this or any way to map controls for this (waiting for the character's slow-as-molasses left/right turning ability to peek around corners or return to an object missed in passing is just not cutting it). Another thread has a method for mapping for a controller that includes left and right sidestep. There is no way in-game to set up such controls (I'm using keyboard), and I can't find a config in the install folder that would pertain to this. Someone tried to tell me there is a config dialog in game with ALT+F10, but no such thing exists: ALT by default is the Jump key, and pressing it with any other keys makes the character jump, the other keys are completely ignored. Using any key combo in the circular menu does nothing at all.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Let's see if I remember correctly...

1. Hit Esc (or "P") while playing to call the in-game menu: you can exit the game from there.

2. See above.

3. Shift + Left/Right Arrow. In other words hold the Shift key (walk) and press lateral movement keys.

Thanks for that, good info. And exiting correctly does not wipe my graphics or key settings.

However, P doesn't do anything. ESC will get you to a part of the menu, but you need the Passport to reach the exit command, and that "wheel" of the menu is not immediately visible depending on where in the game you hit ESC. In the tutorial, it is the first thing you see, and opening it gives only the command to exit to the title screen. In an actual game, the layer with the Passport is not what you see when you hit ESC, and opening the Passport doesn't immediately get you to the exit command, that requires additional presses of the right arrow key. The main menu Passport also requires additional key presses.

Who the H thought anybody wanted the exit command so deeply buried behind an undocumented series of key presses? What possible purpose could that have, other than to confuse and pissoff customers?

Thanks again.
