Having heard all the rage about the Thief games but never actually giving them try I took the plunge and bought GOGs modestly priced Thief package. I've been loving the atmosphere of the first game so far, but I seem to be unable to progress any further with the mission-critical objective "Find the Mystic's Soul Gem". I've spent the last hour or two perusing every thief-related forum I could trying to find a solution and they all say that using fire arrows to light the five torches should open the platform in the center of the room, yet when I try nothing happens. Indeed, I have even resorted to watching a Lets Play-er demonstrate his exact method of torch ignition on the YouTubes and it's no different to what I'm doing. Is there anyone out there who may be able to help me with this problem?

Also, I'm not sure whether or not it's relevant but I'm running the game with the Thief Gold HD Texture mod, which calls for NewDark v1.2. Could this be the result of compatibility issues, maybe?

This question / problem has been solved by voodoo47image
very relevant - this is a known bug with the 0.8.5 version of the hdmod. get the 0.8.6 version, back up your saves, uninstall the game, delete all the leftover folders, install the game, install hdmod 0.8.6 as instructed in the readme, restore the saves, and restart the mission. no other way around this.

I eventually found this out for myself, but thanks to voodoo47 for the instructions all the same as I'm sure there are others with this issue. It's a shame that I had to restart the Bonehoard again (my least favourite level so far) but it didn't take me nearly as long the second run-through.
well, early adopters always risk running into problems - it takes time to squash bugs. the current version is still work on progress, and has some critical bugs, for example the engine not being able to handle all the textures at the same time and crashing (more texture optimizations need to be done to avoid this).

as I've said over at the systemshock.org's engineering subforum - if you want the hot new stuff right out of the oven, you can, but don't be surprised if you'll get your tongue burned.
