There is a noticeable dip in quality compared to the original game levels.

I've had the original for ages and just picked up Gold last night....maybe I shouldn't have. :P

you can always ctrl+alt+shift+end skip the missions you know.

I'm pretty sure it was developed by the same team that made Thief 2 (and many of the same who were involved in thief 1 original version), and it also includes a few nods that foreshadow some of the details of Thief 2.

Their was also an attempt to make a Thief 2 Gold unfortunately Looking Glass closed before it could be completed.
