Hi.

I can't get Yrden alternate sign mode to work. I have invested a skill point in this upgrade and equipped it to my skill tree. However, when I cast Yrden, I still get the big circle that says "slowdown" when enemies walk through it.

Any insights? What do I have to do?

SORRY, extremely sorry: had been dealing with the wrong sign.

But, generally speaking, there are those modes that need three skill points/five skill points to make it work.
Additionally it matters what kind of mutagen you use in that part of the "tree": the stronger, the better.

On a pc with default key settings, you have to keep the "q" key depressed for about 2 seconds for the alternate form of a sign to be activated. If you just tap the "q" key the normal form (which is what you are seeing) will active.
N.B. If you are attacked while holding the "q" key down, the sign will not activate.
