I just installed the game and and have played it for less than an hour, but I am having a hard time understanding why the ratings for the PC version are so high when the game's controls make it painfully obvious that it was made for the console first. I'm not saying it isn't a great game but the controls are obviously a critical part of any game. I don't think I will be able to get used to the KB and mouse controls. My initial impressions are that I may have to play with an Xbox controller. Unless I am missing something I really don't see how a PC game can have an average score as high as 94 when the controls are so clunky. Is the console takeover now so bad that reviewers will just ignore when a PC game's controls are poor because it was initially designed for the console? I just wanted to see how other people felt about this.

the controls get easyer the longer you use them, I use a KB & mouse and switch to a controler only when in boats, but the key binds do help if you don't like the default set up. I also have a 12 button mouse so a lot of my ability's are bound to that.
This was my first pc game after at least 4 years of playing exclusively on sony consoles.
Had no problem whatsoever to get back using kb and mouse with the controls in witcher 3.

Then you don't know any better, do you?

I have played games on consoles AND the PC for many years. There are a lot of good games that have come out that were initially designed for the console and then ported to the PC, but their controls are excellent and blow away the controls in this game. The avatar in this game can't even turn without turning ninety degrees at a time. He's basically a robot.

I love this game.

Having said that, I tried k/m and didn't like how it felt at all. I use an xbox controller and it plays fantastic.

I agree with your initial point. And yes, there are so many console customers now that the focus is there. I'm just glad games are still being made for pc. I'm not sure that will always be the case. My fingers remain crossed.

Before ps3 and 4 I played exclusively on pc since the times of prince of persia (the original one).

Maybe you are just too picky.

Thank you for your response. You confirmed what I suspected was true. I guess I will use the Xbox controller for the game instead of struggling with the awkward K/M controls that just don't work well. I will just think of it as a console game being played on the PC.

I have since looked at a lot of user reviews and there are a LOT of complaints about the K/B mouse scheme.

Tomb Raider, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Metro Last Light, Borderlands 2, Rainbow Six: Las Vegas, Fallout 3, are just some of the games that have far better KB/Mouse controls. Why wasn't I "picky" when I played them? Maybe you are biased.

Based on reviews I would think the game controls are much better with a controller, but I just think that if you are playing an RPG on a PC and the KB/M scheme is no good there should be at least a few points taken off in review scores.
Simply put: Want to play videogames which inherently play better on a pad, invest in a specialized videogame controller. Anyway, to not be an arsehole...

Would you go and lower rating of any flight sim/arcade because they play better with a flight stick? Would you go and lower rating of all racing games because wheel is a better control method? Like or not, gamepad is an input method specifically created for platformers and third person actions games, which quite simply always play better with one when they're done well (and no, Arkham games are most certainly not better on a K/M scheme ;-) You might prefer the method, it might be very polished, but you get objectively more efficient in combat with analogue controls of a pad. It works the same for The Witcher, actually.)

Now I don't want to get into a M/K vs Gamepad debate - all of these control methods have their uses, and they were all created for a purpose. But the notion that a PC game should always get superior M/K controls sounds quite ridiculous to me. Oh, and movement in The Witcher 3 is not only clunky on a keyboard, it's also a bit clunky on a pad - try the alternative movement option in gameplay options, might help.

Pardon me but why? The controls for the boat is the simplest thing in the game.

Played Tomb Raider, and Fallout 3. Don't remember them having anything exceptional in their control schemes.

If it's the latest tomb raider I would agree with the controls.
