Hi mates,

does anybody know if the patch is to be release to fix those terrible horse controls? Can she even jump? I know she can but mostly she cant even jump over the fences. She can be stuck behind low obstacles etc. I love this game but this issue is really game breaking :(
Yea, they really should have given you a car instead of a living being to ride on ...
I dont think that I want too much if I want a horse can jump...
She jumps fine to me... you have to time your jumps right: it's a horse, it's heavy, so it can't jump like a human

I heard people saying you can jump with the horse but I was never able to do it until a few days ago. I admit to having never looked in the manual or any other information on the controls except for the options screen keyboard layout and personal experimentation. Here is how I've found the horse works so far:

Press the following key(s) and get the corresponding result:

W - move forward in a straight line, steer with A and D
SHIFT+W - move forward faster (cantor), steer with A and D

If you press capslock once it toggles whether walk by default or run by default is on in which case the above 2 are reversed from what is listed.

double tap SHIFT+W - gallop very fast forward, steer with A and D

SHIFT (alone, do not press W), move forward with cantor and if you are on a road or path, automatically follow the road
double tap SHIFT (do not press W), gallop forward very fast and follow the road as per above.

With both of the last two if you move the mouse mouse hard left or right the horse will follow that direction turn at a fork in the road. This is non-obvious and I discovered it by accident one day.

To jump with the horse you MUST NOT PRESS W. This means that while holding SHIFT down by itself in a cantor, or double tap to gallop, as long as you are not pressing shift at the time, you can hit the space bar and the horse will in fact jump pretty much every time.

CDPR really should update the game code so that the space bar jumps the horse whether or not W is pressed down as it is kind of dumb the way it works now that you _have_ to let go of W and you might not want the horse to follow the road while doing so.

The horses can and do jump over obstacles. It's just a matter of the right timing, and lining yourself up properly with the obstacle. Kind of like back in Ocarina of Time, on the N64. :P

They could probably do a little fine tuning, but overall I think horse controls and character controls in general are fine.

Considering how some hardcore "master race" folks always claim that Mouse & KB is superior to a gamepad, regardless of the genre, I have to say that looks rather confusing and awkward.

I'm playing with a 360 pad and all it takes to control the horse is the left stick and a single button, and yet you end up with more precise control ( direction and speed ) over the horse ( or character ) and I don't recall any problems, such as not being able to jump.

Yes, it is definitely non-intuitive. I played the game for over a week before I figured out the above controls. They might or might not be well documented somewhere but lets face it - on a modern game you should be able to intuit most of the controls of a game without reading a manual etc. :) Both the horse movement controls and the sign casting controls have this "designed for Xbox, made to work begrudgingly on keyboard too" feel to them.

Patch 1.04 updated the game to allow people to unlock keybinding and be able to rebind any key however they like allegedly, which shows they're open to implementing highly requested features of this nature. Hopefully they will make further enhancements to the controls over time based on gamer feedback as well. Personally I'd rather have FORWARD (W) move the horse forward, SHIFT cantor, some other key gallop, and have it so you can jump the horse any time it is in a cantor or gallop whether following the road or not. I've managed to live with the existing controls mind you, but improvements to them are certainly welcome. :)

Likewise the sign casting keys - I worked around the press-two-keys problem by using custom Logitech G600 mouse configuration with macros. Unfortunately it prevents me from casting a sign and holding it down such as the Axii flame thrower. I'm going to write a LUA script for Logitech mouse profile to try to do what I want it to do, but it'd be awesome if they added the ability to just bind cast sign to a key directly not instead of how it is now, but rather in addition to how it is now (in case someone likes the existing setup).

I might be able to script better horse controls with the Logitech software also, I might look into that. That'd just be a workaround though for myself and other G600 users mind you.

How does sign-casting work on M&KB, and alternate signs in general for that matter? I'm still quite low-level and have yet to unlock the alternate sign modes. Normally you hold down the casting button for the alternate sign mode?

( It's funny how many people apparently finished the game already, even on the highest difficulty. And here I am somewhere at character level 7 or so, on the second difficulty mode, even though I've been trying to play a bit every day since release. Some folks must have been playing 24/7 :P )

The signs are selected either via 3-7 keys, then cast by pressing Q. If Q is held down it is cast and hold alternate mode.
Alternatively you can press the TAB key to bring up an on-screen menu and move the mouse to select the sign you want, but that is absolutely terrible for a keyboard/mouse player. It's really for console gamers with limited buttons to pop up a menu and use a spare joystick knob to select with, not the best choice for keyboard/mouse players.

I have updated my Logitech G600 mouse profile for The Witcher 3 to support one button casting for all signs, and to support cast and hold using LUA scripting. I've been testing it for a few hours now and it works pretty good.

I've been playing the game every day since it came out for many hours a day and my Geralt is only on level 14 right now and I'm still enjoying the sights to see in Novigrad. I have yet to see Skellige. There is absolutely no way humanly possible that any living person on earth has finished this game in its entirety including all optional secondary quests, all witcher contracts, and all treasure hunts etc. with full exploration seeing everything there is to see in the few days since the game was released. It's possible for someone to rush through the game's main quests and do the bare minimum perhaps on the lowest difficulty setting and miss 3/4 of the game I suppose but that'd be missing out on so much the game has to offer.

You can also cycle the signs with the mouse wheel.

Oh, I'm sure at least some of the people who claim to have completed the game on Death March and/or 100% completion have actually done it. I just fail to see the point, aside from "bragging rights". If they're looking to turn it into a competition, there`s no doubt games better suited for that.

Meanwhile I'm level 8, still haven't even been to Novigrad, and just unlocked my first enhanced/alternate sign yesterday. Igni flamethrower ( or is it fireworks? ) -- Yay! :D

Of course people are free to play any way they like, but for myself I figure, a game like this is only released, what... like once every few years? I'm going to take my time and will enjoy my first playthrough quite possibly until the end of the year, or at least until the first expansion is released.

Me too. Works fine.
If controls are unresponsive, turn down your graphics settings; it's probably chugging.

Yeah, I didn't pay $38 to buy a game to race through in 2 nights to get to the end as fast as possible and miss out on 90% of the content, screw that. I don't care if I'm the last person on Earth to finish the game, I'll be the first person to have seen every grain of sand in Temeria at least, and killed every single monster of land, sea, and air. :)
