I just remembered something i saw the game notifying me. It told me if i made a save on 1.03 it wont be compatible with other versions. Does the game refer to previous versions or newer versions?

The note mentions that it won't be backwards compatible; i.e. a 1.03 save won't work on a 1.02 game.

The opposite does not hold. You can still load a 1.02 save on a 1.03 game, and future versions will also maintain this relation (else all your saves would be invalidated and you'd have to restart after every patch).
