I've beaten the main game twice on the third difficulty level so I decided to put it on Death March for the expansions which I haven't played before. Is Death March supposed to turn everyone into a bullet sponge who can one-shot Geralt with common weapons while he's decked out in Witcher gear?

Edit: I don't have Grandmaster Witcher gear yet. Will that make a difference?

Kind of. Quen for the win, bro!
I haven't felt like it turned enemies in to sponges that soak up damage like it is nothing, but you'll have to learn to be extra careful. Smaller enemies in large numbers can be quick to kill you on Death March. You can mitigate some of the risk by buffing your health through green mutagens. Upgrading and using your blade oils is also recommended.
Quen gets taken out pretty easily and that's with mutagens, runes, & glyphs strengthening it.

I don't mind getting killed in a few hits and I like that I actually have to use bombs, potions, & oils to win some tougher battles. However, it's a little silly that bandits can take so many hits from a Witcher steel sword. I guess I'll turn off level scaling.

Well...that might explain it.

Level scaling seemed pretty balanced on the third difficulty level. I thought it would be good for Death March too :(
