It's because the game does not keep your monitor from going to sleep when using a gamepad..

Go to control panel and click "power options". Where it says "choose when to turn off the display", click that. Change it to "never" and your screen will not shut off with the message "no display". I am using a generic gamepad and it does not keep my PC from shutting down the monitor. I am not sure if this happens with an official controller. Regardless, it would seem like having the game running would be enough to keep the monitor from going to sleep..
