Love all the guesses, now this is how it really works.
Let's say you have the basic beast oil recipe. If you find the enhanced or superior beast oil recipe, the basic one disappears, no matter if you have crafted it or not. Since it does go away, you cannot complete the advanced recipe because you don't have the item you wish to upgrade in the first place.
Two options: you reload the save right before you looted the enhanced recipe and try to craft the basic item. Usually it costs you a couple crowns at your local herbalist, I crafted all the oils available at that point by the time I was level 4.
Alternatively, you can just simply buy the basic recipes from vendors after you have found the advanced ones.
