First time playing, I’m starting with #3.
I keep finding references on the net as I figure this out implying that I start with a healing potion called Swallow. I started a game, then restarted because eating food was killing me and I wanted to restart and get sun and stars with my first point (blood and bone, so no meditation healing).

I don’t have Swallow. I do have Tawny Owl. I also don’t have a crossbow that everyone on the Internet seems to think I’m supposed to have.

Did I miss something in the opening sequence somewhere?

You start the game with 3 Tawny Owl potions and a Wolven Hour potion.
You have the recipes for Swallow, Cat, and White Honey, but you don't have the potions.
Vesimir will give you a crossbow when you start hunting the Griffin.

Thanks. Yeah that’s what I have, it just seemed like everything assumed I had these from the beginning.

I think that you can cast a spell to avoid drinking the potion.
