I'm one of those dinosaurs who just can't let go of their good old 17'' CRT monitors, and I've never had any real problems because of that. I usually play games on 1024x768 or 1280x960 if I'm feeling fancy. I tried them both, and the hud elements are positively tiny. I literally have to squint to make anything out of the tutorial windows and the inventory. I'd go so far as to consider this unplayable at the moment. Were those 2 giant black stripes on the top and bottom of the screen really necessary?

I was lucky enough to get the game for free (<3 Skystrider), and I'm not flailing my arms around declaring in a loud voice to give me back my money, but it's still a valid problem. :)

edit: Oh, and my specs, for the sake of completeness: WinXP Pro SP3, Core2Duo E6750, 8800 GTS, and 3 gigs of RAM

Bumping this because I was about to ask the same question. While my monitor is only 19", I'm really happy with it's size. But the tuturial text is SO TINY I can hardly read it at all. I've tried lowering my resolution in hopes of making the interface larger, but it doesn't seem to do anything but make the text even more unreadable. Anyone know if a scaling interface will be added, or will the game be moddable so I could wait for that mod?
Thx!

Editing to add one more note: even the medallion, health and vitality bars and mini map are way to small for my taste. Would love to scale the whole UI! But the hint text, it's just soo hard to read.

Huh, so I suppose proper 4:3 support has simply not been added yet? Seems like a strange thing to omit. Oh well, many great games need serious patching after release, so I guess I'll find other amusements for a week or so...
I'm afraid it appears to be so. I would also really love to use the last 1/3 of my old 17", 4:3-format monitor, because as it is right now, the black bars simply take up too much screen space, resulting in an actual resolution which - in my opinion - fails to do The Witcher 2's graphics justice. I find the restricted view to be like playing the game with binoculars or something, with small interface & text size sadly not having been scaled up as well. :)

I have managed to compensate, though, by stretching the analogue signal sent to the monitor vertically on the screen itself, so the black bars take up less of the screen. But this unconventional tweak is hardly ideal. So, any resolving patches coming up? Please CDProject?
I'm experiencing the same problem.
I always download games before I decide whether I want to buy them or not. Unfortunately, this technique has again proved to be justified. No offense, but I don't intend to buy the game until I know for sure that it works fine.
I have a 17 inch LCD display and I have no problems with text or HUD being too small, although some of them could be a bit larger. Let's hope the patch that includes other ratios comes soon. But I'm not sure if I will change to my native resolution - lately I've been playing more and more games with a 16:9 resolution because of the wider view field, and now playing on 5:4 feels like looking through a binocular, the view angle is much narrower, like I have horse eye covers...

The only resolution that is supported at the moment is 16x9. I know its silly, they decided to bug fix the game and then patch in the other resolutions. All I have heard is that they are working on it. There is no time table. I have sent emails to them and if I hear anything I will be happy to let everyone know. I have 16x10 and I get the same effect as you do. I get letter-boxing about an inch and a half top and bottom of my screen.
Can anyone update anything about the problem? Or are things still the same?

Just watch the forum for updates. I don't expect a patch until tomorrow at best. As far as the resolution issues, I think there is a slight chance they get a 16:10 fix in the patch but, 4:3 and/or 5:4 might be a little while. Information I have gleaned reading comments on thewitcher.com lately.

Take it for what it is worth.
In the meantime you can try using this: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/the_witcher_2/possible_widescreen_fix/ , but it's better just to wait patiently for official support, which might take a while. Sigh.
Right. Quite a bit of time has passed. Is there any news at all that they're working on making the game respectful to my eyesight? Because buying a new monitor for one game (as this is the only game giving me trouble because of that) is silly.
Having the same issue on my 19" monitor, please cdpr fix it in patch 1.3
