I have beaten this boss on Hard after my 5th attempt. However I see there are a lot of people having trouble with this big beastie. As such here's my guide on how to defeat it once and for all.

First, make sure that you have purchased and made the Kayran trap from Cedric, and acquired the Mongoose potion. These two are invaluable, especially the potion (make sure to drink it before the fight starts, also include a Swallow and Tawny Owl in the mix).

Second, the only two signs you should be using is Yrden and Quen. Cast Quen first, as your vigor seems to not recharge when active thus you should still have a pip of vigor left to use Yrden at a later point. Quen will give you a free hit for it's duration, so if the Kayran gets in a lucky shot it will just take off Quen and leave you unscathed. Also note that you should always wait for both pips to recharge before casting Quen again. Unless if you are in major trouble.

Third, the Kayran's attack pattern is easily learned and is typically the same each time. In that it'll attack twice with its outer 4 tentacles (the ones with the growths), then it'll perform a dual attack with it's two main tentacles (these typically only strike in the middle area so make sure to be off to either side at this stage) then it uses it's mucas (again, if you are already off to the left or right it will miss you anyway).

Forth, keep moving! The space bar (dodge) is your friend.

So to the battle, as soon as it starts run either left or right to avoid the first tentacle strike. Then cast Quen. I cannot stress how important it is to keep Quen up as much as possible. After the second strike you should have enough time to plant the Kayran trap at one of the gold highlighted locations. Avoid the dual tentacle strike and subsequent mucas attacks then position yourself near the trap so that one of the single tentacle strikes hit it. This severs the tentacle and takes off a quarter of the Kayran's health in one go.

Next repeat on the same side, and just use Yrden instead of the trap. Once the tentacle is trapped, go to town on the growth (there should be ample time to completely sever the tentacle).

You only need to perform this act once more on the opposite side (only need to cut off one more tentacle). Once done the Kayran will get mad and perform a sideways swipe with it's last tentacle. Starting from the opposite side to wherever you are.

Simply click the right mouse button to jump on, then complete the QTE to cause the tower to fall on the beasties head.

Finally simply run up the tower, avoiding the tentacles smashes, and making sure to keep Quen up. You will then be treated to sweet relief and euphoria as you watch Geralt deal the the final blow Johnny Rico style.

Hope this helps those of you who are having trouble. :) Key points to take away from this:

- Use Quen.
- If your space bar is not broken by the end of this fight you are doing it wrong. :p

What do you do if you never got the Kayran traps? You can buy the formula off Cedric, but you need a steel frame to make them and I never managed to get any at that part of the quest. I've been back to try to find them, but they're gone. I've spent literally weeks on trying to get through this quest and getting to the point where I'm really sick of it.

I think you can just use Yrden instead. It has been a while since I played it, but as I recall, all the special trap does is chop off the tentacle, wheras with Yrden you need to chop it off yourself with your sword.
The Karyan trap works just like a Yrden sign, but doesn't cost vigor... it's a small advantage, and you only get one anyway...

The only steel frame is available (spoilers ahead!)

from a merchant who overhears you when you go to visit the mayor/governor... or rather, the merchant tells you of it, and the frame itself is behind the mayor's place... sneaking is required!

I managed without the traps and used only the Mongoose potion. Try knocking the difficulty down to easy and looking at the solution on YouTube. You must use the Yrden (trap) sign and know when to run up the fallen tower to start the quicktime event. Cinos' explanation is good and YouTube is your friend here. I struggled with the Kayran for awhile until I saw the "trick". After that, two tries and easy peasy done. Failing that, download someone elses save.

This fight (and perhaps the Prologue avoid dragon "fight") were the only two battles I felt where truly unfair. The game get so much better after the Kayran. Worth the struggle.
The Trap
You should aquire the Trapparts for the EP and for the chance to grab the stuff at the govenors backyard early but
don't build/use it because
-if you build the trap..you pay more then you get as reward, even if you raised it
-it doesn't cost vigor but it takes a bit longer longer to place then casting a Yerden
-it's not more usefull then Yrden because its easy and save to cut the tentacle off after it's trapped (as long as you don't take a nap ;) and luring the Kayran to hit the trapped space it's just the same for Yerden and the "special trap"

The Dialog&Potions
After your ready to fight the Kayran start the Dialog with the "witch" but decide then that you will need more time and that you will meet her at the stranded ship. Jump down half the way, save, go down..watch the dialogs and videos, reload...use your potions and skip the videos and dialogs to save the potion duration

The Deathzone
If you move toward the Kayran at the middle area..he will spit poison at you that kills you..even with Mongoose Potion.

The savezone
If you cut the 1.tentacle at the Side with the Tower first you creat a small savezone at the outer corner of this side where you can "rest" until you vigor recharges or until your HP regged

The final tentacle and the mouse
The other victims know what i am talking about...Witcher 2+Win7+Several Softwarecontrolled Mousetypes=major pain at several situations because to get the mouse working you have to make several changes...most important to turn prerendering off or at least down to 1(depending at you card)..and that will cause a small delay
After you cut the outer tentacles you have a QTE jumping at the tentacle...and then Hell open the gates^^...because you have to "powerclick" with the mouse as fast as possible..but with the delay...:(
The only known way is to turn the resolution down, turn off effects, etc. to make the delay through the missing prerendering as small as possible..and then..pray..and try and try again,...
Hi,

I recently purchase Witcher 2 a few months, and decided to get familiar with Witcher2 before Witcher3, and I find I am enjoying the game very much until now. I have spent almost 2 1/2 weeks trying to finish the quest about 'Defeating the Kayran', and I am so frustrated.

I have seen a lot of suggestions, but nothing straight forward until I read the instructions from 'cinos; dated May 2011. It sounds easy enough but I am running out of patience. So, as of today, July 5, 2014 I am seeking if anyone can assist me with any updated info on how to defeat this Kayran!!!!!!

Appreciate your reading this and hopefully someone can assist me in this quest of Defeating the Kayran.
Thanks!
I didn't use shield during that battle.
I had to redo it a few times, but once I learned the visual moves it does at the start of it's attacks it's fairly easy to dodge.

I ran to the left, got the middle tentacle to agro, then after it lifts up again, run to where it was, cast the trap, then run out as it comes down again. Chop chop.

Did that for all three limbs.

You don't need the Kayran trap.
All it does is instantly remove one tentacle. You still have to use Yrden to capture the other two.

The iron frame is at the Loredo residence by the way. You find it during the Indecent Proposal quest, but only if you are stealthy.
Agree this fight is awesome, been dying a lot haha. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks fior the tips .. stopped playing this game as i could not kill it and got frustrated with it

It's always the same with the boss fights in TW1-3: They seem to be challenging as long as you don't know how to manage them. But if you find the king's way (or the king's ways) the boss fights get easy enough.

Btw.: It's no boss fight (it's a ballet of sorts) - but some kind of riddle: The player has to guess how he figures prominently in the choreography of the devs.

You need almost nothing - no potions, oils, no armor, no dodging/rolling - the cheapest silversword will do the job. The only thing which is very, very, very useful is the kayran trap - not as trap, but as signpost. Geralt knows exactly where he has to go.

So if you have real problems with the ballet then switch to "easy" and have a look at the appropriate video:

With trap:

Without trap:

Now you have to watch exactly where Geralt should cast Yrden.

On easy Geralt will not lose much of his health when a tentacle hits him! And if he casts Quen before, he will not lose any health, even in dark mode:
