I bought this game quite some time ago on steam but quite playing shortly after the prologue because the game kept crashing every 45 minutes when i went to save. I thought i would try again because i really want to get Witcher 2 but want to play through the first part of the story.

Ive tried everything i have read on the web to fix the problem. Ran as administrator...turned off autosave...compatability mode...deleted all the saves...everything etc etc...and still no go. I finally just decided to put up with it and save very often so i wouldnt have to go back and redo to much after a crash. However, a few moments ago it crashed again and deleted my last save so i basically lost 3 hours of playtime. I just cant do it anymore.

Has anyone encountered this with the gog.com version? Anyone found a fix? I really want to support CD Projeckt cause im primarily a PC gamer and think they are doing great things for the PC gaming world...but if i cant get this working i think im going to pass on Witcher 2 :( which would be a travesty because everything ive read says it is awesome.

I've collected a few possible fixes in the Fixes to Common Problems sticky thread. The most obvious things for you to try are:

1) Run in windowed mode. This fixes crashing for lots of people. If this works, check the sticky for how to make windowed mode look exactly like fullscreen.

2) Force vsync if you are not already. There's no in-game option but you can try forcing with drivers, or if that doesn't work, use the D3DOverrider program. More details in the sticky.

Yeah...ive tried the window mode as well...still no go...forcing vsync i have not yet tried, but i guess its worth a shot...in 20 years of PC gaming i think this is the first game that i havent been able to find a fix to run properly
Where's the game installed to?

If it's Program Files, uninstall it completely and reinstall it somewhere else, for example C:\Games\The Witcher.

If that fails, try a clean boot and see if it crashes.

I've just replayed the GOG version recently. I haven't had any crashes happen at regular intervals, but rather when I was entering an inn in chapter 2 and chapter 3, I was gambling with the crash with a 0.5% chance to lose. So it wasn't that bothersome, I would just save before entering the inn.

I think I had some occasional crashes happen with the retail, patched and enhanced. I don't really think random crashes can be avoided altogether, it's probably a luck factor, but I've never lost saves in a crash or anything like that.

So I guess I don't really have anything helpful to say. Just because I didn't have any major problems with the GOG version doesn't mean you wouldn't if you got it.

Hey at least you guys got your copy running, my laptop just isn't powerful enough for it. Well at least I have a DRM free copy of the game for a future computer now, along with Gog getting a 5 dollar donation from me and the goodies alone are worth roughly five dolloars so no worries.

Are you getting an error saying you are below the minimum system requirements? If so, you can bypass it. Check the Fixes To Common Problems sticky thread. You will likely need to turn graphics options down but you can probably get it to run.

check out your gpu temps. I'm having this issue with both witcher1 &2, and i'm pretty sure it's directly related to huge spikes in my gpu temps when I try to run these games. I'm in the process of getting a new gpu cooler. Let you know if it helps.
Play the game executing the direct aplication, not the launcher.
