Whenever I go into the launcher for The Witcher and click Launch Game, the game appears under background processes in task manager for a few seconds and then goes away. But the game never launches

Can you provide any additional details about your system? Specs etc.

Also have you tried launching the safe mode option?
Safe mode can be found both in the start menu entry and in Galaxy (if you use Galaxy).

I fixed the problem by changing my compatibility section in properties to Windows Vista
