I have just installed the game and was wondering if the latest patches are applied to it already. So before starting the game i can check for updates, it brings me to the official site and has two different patches. One for Win XP and one for Windows vista, which do i select for Windows 7?

The version of the game provided by GOG is fully patched, no need to install any other patches.
Thanks alot for that..and i have one more question. I notice the game not running incredibly smooth here. Looking at these specs...what settings should i change and where to?

CPU : Intel Core I3 , M 330 @ 2.13GHz
CPU Clock Frequency : 2.13 Ghz
System memory : 4GB

I'd recommend disabling AA. You could also try to reduce the resolution and see if your framerate gets any higher.
Well, i disabled AA and that did alot. It's not stuttering as much anymore. I'm really enjoying the combat so far , so last time i probably didn't read the instructions properly.

Anyway....i got a small problem. I'm planning on hooking up my laptop to my plasma screen with HDMI. Using a controller would be perfect...not the hassle of keyboard and mouse. Would the Xbox 360 controller (for PC) work for The Witcher?

Is it the game that's running slowly or just the cutscenes? I had the "jerky cutscene" problem and what fixed it was fiddling with the 'Depth of Field" setting. Some users need to turn it off to fix the cutscenes, but I had to turn it on. Usually I don't like Depth of Field but it's only used in the cutscenes so that's not too bad.

if the game itself is slow, then yeah, turning down Anti-aliasing is a good idea, and also turning down anisotropic filtering. Other things you can test include shadow settings and texture quality settings. And then of course the overall game resolution, as ThermioN suggested.

Yeah one cutscene in the beginning of the game showing a creature. That one was jerky as hell. So far so good though...but i'm not out of the castle area yet.

I have not tried it myself, but apparently it is possible by using a third-party program to map the controller. Check this thread:
