I was curious as to if anyone remembers what program I would need to use to open .mdb files for The Witcher Enhanced Edition. Say for example, the cm_witch1.mdb (or something) that modifies Geralt's appearance. I wanted to make a mod that replaces his appearence but I can't find anything on these files.

Start by bookmarking http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/Modding and http://djinni.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page These are the main references on modding The Witcher.

The .mdb files can be imported into 3DSMax, using twMax: http://witchervault.ign.com/View.php?view=ToolsandUtilities.Detail&id=8

The Witcher uses a .mdb file format that is different from other Aurora-based games, so you need an importer written for The Witcher, not for NWN 2.

Somebody who uses 3DSMax regularly would be better able to tell you whether you can get satisfactory results from the student edition. The commercial edition ($3495/seat) is probably out of reach of all but the most dedicated and well-funded modders.

All right, so if I wanted to change Geralt's appearance to that of another NPC in the game, I would first have to import those files into 3DSMax? If it wasn't clear in the first post, I'm not talking about making completely separate models or meshes or anything. I just want to swap Geralt's model with another model already in the game.

Thanks for the information, as well. This is really going to come in handy.

Does no one know how to do this anymore? I have seen a bunch of "Play as: blahblah" character mods out there. Is it that difficult to make one? I can remember doing it back when TWEE was first released... I don't remember it being that complicated. I'm pretty sure all you had to do was edit the .mdb files for cm_witch1-5, then change a certain field to whatever character you wanted. only problem is I can't remember how to edit the .mdb files. Can anyone else tell me how?

EDIT: Thanks for the help, cjrgreen, but it isn't even necessary for me to try to make my own mod. I found one at ModDB that does exactly what I wanted it to.

If anyone is interested, he is the link: http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dopplers-essence
