Am I wrong (I hope so) or am I being forced to download another product before being allowed to download the patch files? I know I don't need the patches for the GOG version, but I wanted to check out the process before deciding where to order The Witcher 2 from since I know that Steam will handle the update process for me. I'd like to buy it from GOG for several reasons, but may reconsider. BTW, I also think its dishonest to have all those DOWNLOAD NOW buttons infer that you are downloading the patch when you are. in fact, downloading the other program. Here's hoping I'm just flat out wrong about the whole thing!

Could you clarify? What exactly you're trying to do and with which game version?
I am not sure what your talking about. What site you are looking at?

The steam version of witcher 2 won't be auto-patching for you. Cd-project stated that the only way that you can get patches is through the games launcher, provided you register it.(you won't be able to patch it at all if you do not) Gog also said that they would eventually update their game version with patches after the patching cycle dies down. I wouldn't expect Steam to get patches any Sooner than Gog.
Sorry for the confusion. I'm talking about the original Witcher game. When I tried to register the game from the launcher I was told that the server was down. I then checked for updates (also from the launcher) and when I clicked on the patch I wanted I was taken to the SOFTPEDIA download site - that's the site I was referring to.

That's not the point. I wasn't trying to patch the game. I was just checking out the process for future reference and was surprised and disappointed with what I found, especially considering the customer-friendly nature of both GOG and CD Project.
TC: I think your confused.

You don't have to download any other program to get the patches for Witcher 1. Are you mistaking the google ads for the download link. If you press the right link, It tells you to pick your download source, then it downloads the patch .exe.

For future reference is useless, because Witcher 2 won't get patches in the same way as Witcher 1.

Witcher 2 will get its patches straight through the launcher and the launcher will apply it. You need to register the game and That is the only way to get patches. Even the Steam version will need to be patched this way, they won't be auto-patching it for you like they do to other games.

Links don't always stay up for 4+ years, and they've been selling nothing but the Enhanced Edition for 3 of those.

At least they support the game that long, unlike EA...

I can't argue with that.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate you and H2IWclassic taking the time. For what its worth, based on your posts and my prior experience with GOG, I'm going to go ahead and order The Witcher 2 from them as soon as I finish writing this.

You can't really judge the patch process without seeing it in action.

Although I'm not suggesting buying the game purely on that basis anyway, there's a lot more to a videogame than post-release support.
My initial interest in ordering the game, at all, was based on my enjoyment of the first Witcher game. My interest in ordering it from GOG was based on my past experience with them, and the customer focus that they and CD Project seem to share.

Thanks again for your help. My order has been placed.
Patches downloads for The Witcher are handled by Softpedia servers. That's why you get redirected to Softpedia... You don't get another program, you just download from another source because bandwidth costs a lot of money and The Witcher is an old game so it's probably more viable for CDPR to rely on a third party.

In the end, it's like if you downloaded the patches from Filefront or any other free download site.
