when I load the menu screen every campaign I try and launch asks for a serial number. I did not pay for a game I cannot play!

thanks for the reply but I did try reloading the game many times and it failed each time. I already asked for a refnud. not too crazy about the interface on Settler's 2 and 3 anyway. 10 annaverery at least has a functional tutorial.

It's literally right there in the game files. (I think it used to also be a bonus goodie, but maybe I was wrong.)

As for why, I have to assume the powers that be at Blue Byte or Ubisoft were insanely paranoid and glued the function to critical game code that couldn't be removed.

Their own History Edition release on Uplay tells a different story, since there are no more serial keys there...

I did two things and am not sure which one did the trick. First was to right click the regs file in the main directory file and 'run as administrator", second was to right click the S3 exe file in the main directory and also run as administrator.
