hi, i say that, because i have always got the impression that the game is somehow buggy under DosBox...
it is difficult to explain why and when exactly, but sometimes during a play, in particular in "Unlimited Play" Mode, after some hours, i witness very strange events: just built road without a carrier, just built construction site without a builder, just attacked with losses barracks without the right number of soldiers inside etc.
at the moment i have not yet tested if these events occur also during a play directly under WinXP, without DosBox.
if someone else may confirm that, it would be greatly appreciated!

Road without a carrier: is possible temporarily, but is also possible through a bug. Most often just building the road again fixes it.

Construction site without a builder: if you don't have enough builders then nothing odd about this, a builder should eventually come if all the other buildings get done.

Barracks without the right number of soldiers inside: more details needed one this one, who's barracks, what did you do, do you have free soldiers etc.

Any transportation traffic jam can cause severe problems in the game. Of course most often these happen to the AI player, human player learns and knows how to avoid them.

However, there are bugs that occasionally happen and they used to happen in regular DOS as well. The game may even crash. The worst issues are with harbors. Can't be helped really, but there is a Return to the Roots project though with this kind of bugs "fixed", it is a multiplayer remake that requires you to have the original game as it uses the original game files to have the exact same look and feel.

clearly im speaking about BUGS, im an expert player and i know well game mechanics...
my question is if these bugs are generated by DosBox.

No, I've played the game a lot less under DOSBox so I can't comment actual play experience a lot, but I can recall having this kind of issues while still playing under DOS & older versions of Windows. DOSBox emulation is quite complete, there are some things that are not implemented but most of those are things that are not used by anything.

You could also play the game under a more complete emulation. There is Virtual PC 2007 available as a free download from Microsoft and Bochs is another emulator that emulates a whole computer: http://bochs.sourceforge.net/getcurrent.html - DOSBox in comparison only emulates DOS & hardware well enough mainly to be able to run the games. The Settlers II has been listed as fully supported for many years by now.

the game has even no need to be played under any emulation, i can play directly under WinXP @640*480 and with no sound & music... and it seems to me the best way to play! (the fastest and probably the most reliable)
If you want to have an attempt at getting sound to work under XP you can try setting up VDMsound: http://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/

It creates a virtual legacy soundcard that DOS programs and games should be able to see, so that should cover getting sounds. I think you may get music to work simply by selecting General MIDI from the list.

I'm running Windows 7 64-bit so I don't have any kind of DOS support.

i already know VDMSound, but in that case i intentionally run the game without any kind of emulation to maximize stability..
did u try to simply run the Settlers .exe file as i do under WinXP?...
Even what you run now is emulation, it is Virtual DOS machine (or NTVDM) that has been around since Windows NT up to 32-bit Windows 7. It is not included in 64-bit editions of Windows.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_DOS_machine

DOSBox and other solutions were in part developed because of the limitations in NTVDM's emulation (such as often no support for sound).

meudoland: , i witness very strange events: just built road without a carrier, just built construction site without a builder,
I run it under dos box. I found the answer for me. It was a Storehouse (that had the stop storage setting)

this storehouse had the door permanently open. From disconnecting it from the path network, fixed the problems
