Hi all,

I have recently bought Settlers 3 from GOG and am very happy to replay one of my favourite childhood games. Everything works fine - except one thing.

I know the game only supports 4:3 resolutions, while my Laptop has a display with 1366x768 pixels. Theoretically, it should display the 1024x768 resolution just fine, but the displayed ratio is a little... squeezed. it's more like a 1:1 ratio than a 4:3 ratio. The game itself seems to be rendered in the correct ratio, but the output is squeezed (I think this is just the right word to describe the look), resulting in some aliasing. Just like rendering a still image in a different site ratio.

I play on a Laptop running Windows 7 64-Bit with a Nvidia GT 520 M graphic card.

I really hope someone can help me there. Thank you in advance!

I have a familiar issue.

For me the Resolution is okay but stays to far on the left.
On the right site is a black bar and left is hidden in the frame of the monitor..

in 800x600 is all fine.. but i want the bigger resolution ^^
The problem are the different aspect-ratios since you are trying to display a 4:3 resolution on a 16:9 display which is causing the squeeze effect. You can fix this but you have to live with black bars on on both sides of the screen if you want to keep the original ascept-ratio.

With a Nvidia GPU you can change the settings in the Nvidia Control Panel. Open your Control Panel -> Dispplay -> Adjust Desktop size and position. As a scale mode pick "aspect ratio" and activate the override option checkbox for games and programs. If you are getting issues with other programs just uncheck this box again if you're done with Settlers 3. But for most old games I strongly recommend this option to avoid any squeezing and modern games and programmes already support your native resolution, so there should be no issues with this.
Try out if theres a difference for you if you scale with your display or GPU since it depends on the resolutions and there is no general "best choice" for that option. But in most of the cases you shouldn't notice any difference.

After saving this settings start Settlers 3 again and you should notice the black bars at both sides of the screen. But you should have the right aspect-ratio now without any squeezing.

The other option is choose the "no scaling" option which will force to display the native resolitions with black bars everywhere around. This option can improve the quality a bit since you are using the native resolution without any scaling but since the graphic of Settlers 3 is a bit aged you shouldn't see any difference at all. So I recommend to use the "aspect ratio" option.
