I was just playing Settlers 2, 10th anniversary edition. It's a fun game, but one thing that I've been finding a bit frustrating is that I have to manually stop the coin supply on every military building as soon as it is built.

If coins supply is not blocked, then the coins generally get spent in an extremely inefficient way. Micromanaging coins can result in a huge boost to overall military power, and so it's really worth doing if one's trying to play as well as one can.

So, while I'm playing the game I keep a careful eye on new event messages - because if one of those messages is for the completion of a barracks, or some other military building, I have to go to there immediately to tell the new building to stop the supply of coins... It's an effective technique, but it's a bit tedious.

I'd really like for coins to be blocked by default. Does anyone know of any way to change that default setting?
No, I'm afraid there's no way to change it, except for installing the vikings addon, and that's not easy to obtain in a legal way.

with that installed the gold is off by default, but you still have to go to each military building to evacuate it, so it doesn't really matter in the end, and you got to make a habit of keeping check.

I've also been looking if it was possible to change the notification sound for the different types of messages, bc my ida was to give the military ones an other sound, but didn't find a way sofar.

Alas.

Thanks for the info.

This is one of those times when I kind of wish I knew assembly well enough to see if I could fix it myself by editing the .exe. (I suspect that finding the right part of the code would be a massive chore even for an expert in assembly anyway.)

I think evacuating the buildings is a lot more situation dependant, and it isn't a big deal if you forget to do it - so I don't mind about that one.

Changing the notification sounds would be cool. I'd like to disable the sound for the 'autosave' notification...
Yeah, it would have been nice if the notification system was slightly more customizable, but modding it tactically might break the game if taken too far,but if it's just the gold supply it seems even the devs liked that idea, since the vikings add-on/update has it.

Just a shame Vikings was never released in English, guessing that's the main reason it's not on digital sale. There is of course my unofficial translation, but suppose and can imagine they don't want to make their clients use that.

Alright, I've done it. I now have your unofficial translation of Vikings (except that I've kept the original German sounds). I've only recently started the first mission, but I'm already feeling the benefits of not having to manually block coin supply for every building. (The main benefit is to my sanity...)

Thanks for the help.

By the way. Is there an easy way I can edit some of the translated files? I noticed an in-game message that I thought should be changed, so I thought I'd see what's inside those .txt files... I was expecting plain text, but unfortunately it isn't so straight forward.

I was intending to change "attack averted" to something like "attack repelled", or "defence successful". To me, averted implies that the enemy was somehow prevented from attacking, such that my soldiers didn't actually need to fight.
Yeah, it can be edited, might be a good idea, as I'm not a native speaker ;) I'd love it if someone reviewed my attempts.

The files are packed with DNGed (a small commandline tool for this packing format) I guess there are several other tools that can unpack/repack it, but I used this one.

PM me your email and I'll send you the tool and any other files you require.

While we are at it: Why isn't the Vikings expansion included in the GOG version by default (or why isn't it available on GOG at all)? Seems like a pretty important expansion to miss out on.

Yeah, it would be nice if it got included, as I've said before, the 12 extra single p[layer missions, the gold, the 'recruit here' and the updated engine with sub-goals are well worth it in my opinion, but I guess the fact it was never officially released in English blocks it.
Only in German, Czech, Polish and Russian as far as I know, and they don't want to make us play 'Wikingowie' ;)

I do suppose if they released the German one, people would get it and find their way to the translations, but ofcourse it's not official.

I would get it if the price was decent, just to have a online digital copy of my disk.
