I bought and installed the game through GOG Galaxy yesterday, and have had constant problems with crashes since then. The first time it crashed was after creating my character, when it immediately closed the game window and also left GOG Galaxy non-responsive. After forcing an end task on GOG Galaxy and then running a "Manage Installation -> Verify/Repair" I was able to get the game to run to the point where you land on the first planet before it once again crashed.

Again I was left with an unresponsive GOG Galaxy that I had to force to shutdown, repeated the Verify/Repair (which takes quite a bit of time), and then started the game up again. This time I got to the point where you earn your first acheivement before the game crashed. So I repeated the process and this time I got to the point where you hack your first box before the game once again crashed.

My system specs are Radeon RX Vega with 8GB of graphics RAM, i7-4790K CPU, and 32GB of RAM.

Haven't had any issues myself (I am running in Linux though) is your system running any background processes while playing? sometimes those can cause other programs to become unstable.

The PCGamingwiki page suggests installing the Windows 10 Media Feature Pack if the game crashes:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/mediafeaturepack

https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Outer_Worlds
All of the media feature pack versions came back as not appropriate for my system (they would download but not install). I also tried updating my graphics drivers after repairing the files in GOG, but it still only let me play for maybe 10 minutes before crashing again. Also, when it does crash it doesn't go to a black screen or anything, it just closes instantly and cuts straight back to GOG Galaxy which then starts syncing (as it does when you normally exit a game).

Edit: From doing some more searching online some other solutions have been suggested elsewhere:
- Set the FPS in the graphics settings to 60 (tried, didn't help)
- Run game as administrator (tried, didn't help)
- Update graphics drivers (tried, didn't help)
- Turn off Game Bar and Game Mode settings in Windows (tried, didn't help)
- Run SFC Scan (trying now)

Second Edit: So after trying all of the above, the last time I played the game it didn't crash. Though I did only play the game for about 30 minutes, and after exiting the game GOG Galaxy shut itself down.

SFC scans seem to be a thing that Windows is requiring more frequently. The recent Win 10 update caused me to have WER FAULT errors (At least I think that's what it was) which were only fixed by sfc /scannow in Command Prompt.

I'm not sure what Windows is doing with my hard drives, but it's mildly concerning. You might also want to make sure your hard drive is defragmented. It can make a huge difference in crashes.

Other than that, I don't have any suggestions, sorry. I haven't had more than a single crash on my EGS version, across multiple installs.

I know that doesn't help you, so hopefully the defragging or sfc scan you already did, fix the issue.

Good luck!

You might install the Media Feature pack as described in this link : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3145500/media-feature-pack-list-for-windows-n-editions

The reason why installation did not work was that is seems that their installation paradigm changed with the last buil of Windows 10 (build 2004 from May 2020)

I had the same problem as you and this fixed mine

Good luck
