Huh, now that this is rereleased I can talk about this game.

I've never played strife through the original engine. only ever via source ports so it could be an issue with that,
but has anyone beaten this game on the highest difficulty?
I can't even get out of the opening room.

I'm working on it now, but the opening room is definitely a challenge. Grab the 2 medikits and keep cover, and try to keep the first guard between you and the second so that he takes some of the shots. Just keep trying until you're left with enough health to take on the last guard outside, then you can visit caches like the one in the blacksmith's house to get extra medikits (and maybe even the one in Harris' room). And with the crossbow Rowan gives you the enemies in the Sanctuary aren't too tough as long as you keep cover. You could even hop the pillars to the left of the entrance, get the ring, and take the exit near the prison cell back to Rowan, join the Front, and then you'll have access to unlimited free healing from their medic.

The first area isnt that hard :P
what skill are you on?
The highest difficulty is a bit bugged in ZDoom because it uses the same adjustments as Doom's highest difficulty, which includes increased aggressiveness for enemies. In vanilla (or Chocolate Strife, or SVE) you'll find it a lot easier:

You can see on these videos how the Bloodbath start is much easier normally, with acolytes that don't shoot you immediately and without stopping:

Basically, the AI for enemies has to make them choose between moving and attacking, they can't do both at once. Normally they choose moving quite often; but in Doom in Nightmare, they'll choose attacking nearly always if they have line of sight, so they tend to stay in place and shoot constantly as long as they see you. In Strife the probabilities for choosing move or attack aren't changed by the skill setting, so the acolyte will move around you instead of shooting you, which makes this much easier.

As much as I love ZDoom, dont get me wrong, I love the port, its how I play Doom I & II/Heretic/Hexen most of the time
(I briefly gave Doom retro a try, and while I think Brad Harding is a cool guy I went back to ZDoom due to smooth doom).

I have to say I perfer VE for playing Strife, If you guys could patch in some form of SVE.wad support ( I doubt it due to legal and technical/programming reasons) It would be awesome.

But yeah dont take this as a "I hate zdoom post"
Do'nt worry, I don't. The great thing about the multiplicity of source ports for the Doom engine is that people can use what they want, when they want; there are certainly good reasons to use SVE's own engine for SVE!

I'd like to get some support for SVE in ZDoom -- not the enhanced rendering stuff, but at least the new items (such as the berserk power) so that the SVE campaign could be played, with its additional secret maps and tweaked scripts. Capture the Chalice will probably remain out, since it'd require ZDoom to first get support for Capture the Flag more generally, something which has been so far left for multiplayer-oriented ports like Zandronum to worry about.

Yeah, I knew about that a year ago and it really hasn't been worked on, I would prefer more....official support :)
He he he, well its a relief to find out the game is just a bit bugged on Z doom. maybe someday I'll find a way to pull it off. once you get out of the first room it should be a lot more reasonable as you have more resources to fight with.
