I've played The Longest Journey on my old Vista PC and my Win7 netbook, and now I'd like to continue my playthrough on my new Win8 PC.
1. Display issue with the "Quit Game" dialogue
First I used the archived installer from when I bought the game, and I transferred my savegame files into the according AppData/Roaming folder. The game recognized my old savegames, but when I tried to quit, instead of the "Quit Game" dialogue, the game only showed a blank white window and the in-game mouse pointer (in the form of a dagger) was frozen to the spot and did not move anymore. I shut the game down with the task manager, uninstalled it (keeping the savegames) and then downloaded the most recent installer, assuming the old one was lacking Win8 support (as Win8 wasn't out yet when I first downloaded the game).
But after I installed the most recent, allegedly Win8-compatible version, the problem persisted. I found out that if I keep the Escape button pressed, the "Quit Game" dialogue is flashing on and off, but as soon as I let go off the button, the color and writing disappears again and there's just the blank white rectangle instead of the window. I can move the mouse pointer while I keep Escape pressed and the dialogue is flashing (the dagger turns into an arrow). Once I let go of the Escape Button, the mouse pointer disappears, too, but if I moved it to the spot where the "Yes" button was before and click, the game quits. Any idea how I can fix this display issue? Did anyone else experience it?
EDIT: I forgot to mention, the workaround with the Escape button and the flashing dialogue only works in the main menu; in-game, instead of pressing Escape you can only click on the Quit logo and holding the mouse button pressed doesn't have the effect that holding Escape in the main menu has. So the only way I've found to quit in-game was to shut down the process via the Task Manager, which also messes with the font display in Windows application afterwards (e.g. the Explorer, the browser, Word), calling for a system reboot to set things right again. :/
2. New savegame location?
Also, the new installation seems to have changed something in the way savegames are handled, as the game doesn't find my old savegame files from AppData/Roaming anymore. I suspect it's connected to the settings windows that opens before the game starts, where you can select a player profile now, and the old files weren't connected to one. How do I get the game do use them again? SOLVED! (See below)
