After a long while of not playing this I went back to finish up the game. When I tried to load my save games, i.e. when i click on 'continue the journey' main menu it show no saves. However I checked the appdata and my saves are all sitting there. So I am not sure what to do, I don't know how to get my game saves to be recognised by the game.

There are several things I can think of you may need to check:

1) Save folder location is here if game is installed via Galaxy client: <GOGGalaxy folder>\The Longest Journey\Save

2) The folder above should contain a subfolder ('01' in my case) with save data and a single txt file with same name ('01.txt'). The contents of this txt file is like this:
[Player]
Name=XYZ
where XYZ should be the internal name of your windows account you're using to play the game (the name of your windows user folder under which My Documents and such can be found).

3) The settings file ('preferences.ini' in main game folder) should contain the line:
SaveDir=01
where 01 should match the folder and txt file name from 2).
