Can anyone explain why my GOG digital version of The Longest Journey crashes about 50%-75% of the time during cut scenes and yet my CD version, when installed and patched, does not? I went through the forums and checked all the discussions that I could find regarding crashes during cut scenes with the GOG version, literally tried all that was suggested, and yet still had the same problem. This gives me cause to wonder whether the GOG version includes the latest patch, as this is the only variable that I can think of. With my patched CD version, the entire game ran from start to finish without a single crash and without issues.

Does anyone know why this would be? I didn't buy the digital version so that I would be forced to use my CD version.

Which version of Windows are you using?
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

MarianFA: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
Yes, I expected that!

Let me explain:

You have as I had before GOG; a 4 CD Retail version and that version miraculously works with no problem on WIN 7 32/64 bit!
But later a 2 CD version was released which didn't work quite so good on WIN 7 for some players (FMV cutscenes in particular)

And when GOG got TLJ, they first had a version which was exactly like a 4 CD patched version and it worked flawlessly on my WIN 7 and almost for everyone. That version had a 1.0.0.9. GOG version number and luckily I kept it.

But when WIN 8 came out, GOG decided for some reason to go from this version to smaller 2 CD version you can buy now; version number 2.0.0.12.
And as you see in game card it work only on XP, Vista and 8.
I don't know about WIN 10, but I couldn't get it to run on my WIN 7 64bit computer.
I tried everything I could find on GOG forums, GOG help, GOG support and all over internet, but the FMV cutscenes simply won't play till the end and always crashes to desktop.

I was lucky to have kept the previous version, which still works flawlessly!

I would like to thank you so much for that comprehensive answer; I appreciate it. You have made sense out of what made no sense at all. Very helpful! :-)
Is there any way to download the old 4 disc GOG files?

New version runs on Win 10. The only problem is that cursor disappeares when I try to load, save or exit game.
I also can't get it to run on Windows 7.

Is there any way to access the old GOG files?

Just a quick, minor suggestion you may wish to keep in mind for the future: using "digital" in comparison with "disk" versions is purely a marketing term that lazy marketers use to try and make people imagine some sort of "special sauce" in "digital" versions that is absent in "disk" versions, and it's complete poppycock...;) There is no difference--none at all--between the files you get on a game disk (say, a DVD) and the files you get when you download a game via the Internet. All of the files on the disk are "digital" files, 100%--and all of the files in the download are "digital." All computer files, regardless of delivery media, are *digital*...;) There are no "non-digital" program/game files available anywhere. Indeed, if a file is not "digital" then it won't run on a computer.

What you are talking about is merely the difference in *game versions* between what you downloaded and what's on your DVD or CD. If both versions are the same version, then whether the files are on a disk or whether you download them from the Internet, is irrelevant...;) There is as much chance they'll be the same version as that they'll be different versions. The differences you describe have nothing to do with any difference in files between "digital" files and files on a game disk--all of them are 100% "digital."

Anyway--gawd, I hate marketers...;) I wonder what they'd call files that come on a disk through the mail, eh? "Snail digital"? Too funny...;)
Yes, waltc, points taken. :-)
