Hello,
I am having trouble on Windows XP with the known "Police Station" crash bug (see http://www.longestjourney.com/help/faq/knownbugs/police.html).
SPOILERS BELOW
Basically, I forgot an item and had to re-enter the police station after getting in the first time using the garbage truck. The only way to re-enter is through the front doors, where the game crashes. I attempted to download the patch above and it would not install due to missing registry keys (which I presumed was due to the GOG installation). I also attempted to disable hardware acceleration using the preferences.ini change to no avail.
Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi,
Don't you have a save before going into the police station ?
As for the patch, i'd expect gog's version is already patched to the latest version.
EDIT: I just checked this and gog's version of TLJ is build 1.61, so the patch you linked to is already included.
Edit 2: I just noticed you're on XP so my other suggestion doesn't apply...

OK, well, I just played back through it quickly (hooray ESC key!) so no worries.
For other users though, be wary of the police station crash!

Ah, that's one way of solving it ;)
And yeah, making a save before going into the police station is always a good idea.
Anyway, have fun with TLJ.
I can't get into the police station myself and I was just starting to enjoy the game and its storyline very much.
Is there any kind of solution here? Whatever I do, the game crashes as soon as I see the view of the police station entrance with the police standing on the left.
EDIT: I was able to avoid the crash by launching configure.exe and unticking the two first settings. This resulted in some graphical glitches like models flashing through certain things, I just re-enabled them after I had gotten past that one screen.

I'm having this same error, when i enter the police station the crashes.
I tried to run the fix that came with the gog's version, but it says that i must have the 2º CD inserted on the PC, but i don't have the images of the CD in order to mount it.

Do you guys now how can i install the fix ?
im having the same problems as well. and i hate it cause im getting into this game and im stuck at this "road block". please someone find a solution for this. :(
As Daedolon suggested, disable "Enable 3D Acceleration", "High Quality 3D Models" and set color depth to 16-bit in the TLJ config at the start. It'll be quicker than trying to install the patch.
None of the suggestions above worked for me (using windows 8). The only thing that did was applying this patch (which gives you a terrible font and, in my case, no sound. Installing individual files that come with the patch doesn't work). I made a back up of the main files, copy/pasted the patch contents into the TLJ folder, started the game and went into the police station then made a save, switching back to the original installation files after.

The patch, which is an installer, wouldn't work on it's own giving me an error on not finding the 2003 release, which I suspect is because the game is already up to date (begs the question if that being so, why are we still haveing this problem?). I had to extract the files as if the installer was a zip.

I'm having problems with this, too. The game simply crashes as soon as I enter the police station for the first time (through the front doors). The patch included with the GOG version doesn't install because it prompts for a CD. I tried downloading the patch separately (linked in the above post), but it won't install because it doesn't detect the "2003 version" of the game.

I've tried different configurations and graphics settings through both the launcher and the compatibility tab in the shortcut, but nothing seems to work. Plus, every time the game crashes, I have to reinstall it or else it won't launch because of missing registry keys, so it's a real drag to troubleshoot.

I'm not sure how to extract the files for a manual installation, as the above poster apparently did. It does seem ridiculous that if the game is already patched and up-to-date that it would still have this problem.

Anyone have any new ideas, or should I contact GOG's crack team of customer support wizards directly?
There is a way to get into the police station without modifying the game. That's how I got into it. This isn't a spoiler per se, but I hid it in the attachment just to be safe ;)

Edit: clarified the text in the file and some grammar.

Which is why I stated: "The patch, which is an installer, wouldn't work on it's own giving me an error on not finding the 2003 release, which I suspect is because the game is already up to date." :)

I used universal extractor via context menu (right click, choose extract files). Haozip also worked, so I can't imagine other compression utility programs not working either (but I could be wrong).

All in all, dxhaFFer is correct, and you are NOT missing much not going into the Police Station.

Thanks for your replies.

Yeah, it confuses me to as to why the patch would make a difference if the game is already supposedly patched to the latest version.

To be clear, I've actually played through this part of the game before, so I know what I'm supposed to do, but that was on an older computer, and I've since gotten a new one.

I was under the impression that I had to try going into the police station the regular way in order to trigger a flag that would allow the alternate way to work. It didn't work when I first entered the area, but that was before I saw the "news broadcast" and spoke to the guard. Perhaps that's all I needed to do? Or is there something else I'm forgetting?
There really should be a warning on the download page about this. The thing that causes the crash for me is "Enable 3D Acceleration". Everything else can be left at highest. Windows 7 64-bit, Catalyst 13.9
Ok I just ran into this problem and might be on to something. You tick off the two boxes as mentioned above (I didn't set the game to 16bit), and when you climb the stairs don't doubleclick for running. For me the game continously crash when I do that. When I walk (single click) up the stairs however the game doesn't crash. If I don't tick off the boxes the game will crash on me whether I walk or run up the stairs.

Funny thing is that ones you're past the crash point, you can reload the save you made at the foot of the stairs and now you CAN both run and walk up the stairs. If you completely restart the game in the same settings, you have to walk again. At that point running up the stairs will still crash the game (for me). For me it works like this 100% of the time.
