So for the record this game used to run just fine. I'm a little baffled as to how things got this bad. But now when I try to play it just walking around town for a couple minutes is enough to triggering a total system lockup. It doesn't even just crash the game, it actually brings down my entire system.

I realize that this doesn't necessarily sound like a game-specific issue but no other games that I'm currently playing have any problems even remotely like this. In fact they're running just fine (and they're much more technically demanding games).

So what has actually changed between when the game worked and its current state? The only thing I can really think of is that I got a new monitor, but it's a little hard to believe that's the cause. But just in case I did try running the game windowed at a lower resolution, as well as turning off freesync (because the new monitor supports it) but that didn't help.

I'm not even entirely sure how to start investigating the problem because I don't even get an error or anything. It's literally just a sudden lockup.

I know this isn't helpful at all, but I have the EXACT same problem. Game used to run perfectly fine, then all of a sudden it decided to completely lock up my system every 10 minutes. And it cannot be my PC that's the problem. It's more than up to the task, and all of my other games are running perfectly fine, even the ones that are way more demanding than this one.
I can't even check what the problem is since my entire PC just freezes. I can't even get to the task manager to see what's wrong, much less get a crash report.

I've tried reinstalling the game itself, reinstalling my drivers, lowering the graphics settings to as low as they will go, the only thing I haven't tried is reinstalling Windows since it would mean losing a metric fuckton of data.

Please, I'm getting desperate. This can't be good for my PC.
