I was so excited to see this game pop up on GOG, I bought it right away. But now I'm finding that something is very wrong.

Whenever I try to start the game, it takes about three seconds and then the game stops responding. In Task Manager, I can see the executable start, and then without touching anything, it says "Not Responding" next to the executable in the Task Manager window. I've tried using the executable itself, I've tinkered with the "DX cfg" executable, I've tried using the compatibility settings, deleting the opening movie, running it in windowed and full screen at lower resolutions... nothing seems to be working.

I'm running Windows 10 (64 bit), with a GTX 1070 and the newest drivers for it. I only have one monitor as well. if anyone had the same issue and figured out how to get the game running, I'd appreciate some insight on how.

I had very similar issue. For me it was a firewall that blocked some registry edits game wanted to make (DImput and whatever, the kind of edits games usually do, nothing suspicious). Maybe try to pause firewall and antivirus for a moment, see what it does? Then add it to exceptions if it is indeed the issue. (I do understand your disappointment this was insta buy for me too :) )
Gave that a try, but no luck. Even with everything related to the firewall and antivirus turned off, the executable goes to "Not Responding" on Task Manager three seconds after I double click it.

Hmm, sorry it didn't work, I also tried everything you described in your post before I went for the firewall (every combination of compatibility setting, even the resolution ones and running as admin), and for once it seems it's not Galaxy acting up, so I am afraid I don't have any new ideas.. Quick Googling didn't bring anything related too (bunch of problems with vids, music and localization but not what you described).
Well. This is... odd.

So I was trying something. I decided to uninstall the Windows 10 codec pack that I've had installed since last year. I was thinking maybe something in it was being a prick and not letting this game start. So, I uninstalled it and was prompted to restart my PC to finish the uninstall. And when I went to restart my PC, it wouldn't. Now, here's a little backstory...

I have an odd issue that crops up about once a week. At some random point during the day or night, my USB ports will stop detecting new things that I plug into them (namely USB drives). When that happens, I also can't start a game... at all. I have no idea what causes it, but it's been going on for a couple of years, and I've never found anything that gets it to stop. So, imagine my surprise when my computer hangs on the restart... which is another effect of this odd issue. So, I hold down the power button to force my PC off, and then turn it back on.

Now, I try the game and presto... the opening cinema starts. I tinker with the controls, get the graphics up to max and all of that, listen to the music as I start reacquainting myself with the game... all seems well. So now the question is, was it the uninstalling of those Windows 10 codecs, or was it the odd issue where my PC stops detecting new plugins on the USB ports and won't restart or run a game? I don't know.

So yeah, there are two possibilities right now, but I'm not reinstalling the codecs until later. I'm going to enjoy the game while it's cooperating, and then I'll reinstall those things tomorrow and see what's what.

Oh yea, the joys of vintage PC gaming :D ... My first guess would be codecs but only cause I had trouble with game videos causing problems before, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was the second thing... Your USB issue is indeed weird but it seems to be Windows' hobby. My laptop for example decides to drop external USB DVD drive about once in three months - reconnect, restart nothing helps until I manually uninstall the device (that is only identified by code, not by name, so fun times searching for it), only then it connects it again... If you haven't yet, try "sfc /scannow" command line command (run as admin), it often helps with busted system files. Although it might as well be firmware / driver conflict for what anyone can tell.

Glad to hear you managed to run the game in the end, it's definitely worth the trouble (yea yea, it might be nostalgia speaking, I have very fond memories of this game trying to run it on my 1st proper PC)

Upvoted this comment because, it's awesome that you posted the solution that works for you. I'm not having the same issue, it was more that I have my default video card drivers set a certain way for default that enhances game settings which caused a conflict with the game and caused it to CTD upon launch. I was going to suggest you try tweaking driver settings till this post since that's what worked for me, but, I see that wouldn't have done a damned thing for your situation lol.

Regarding the usb issue. Have you noticed if it's consistent every week at the same time? If so, it might be going through some apps to try and find if there's any program that's scheduled to launch at the same time.

If it isn't consistent regarding the time/day then I agree with Cpt.Bilsn.

The only other thing I'd recommend as, in rare cases that could be a sign of a PUP or some type of malware would be to run a scan of your pc in safe mode w/nw with MalwareBytes or a similar Virus Removal tool. But then again, that advice is based off of previous OS's where Windows Firewall was as effective as wet paper & Windows Defender didn't exist or function correctly :-/
