I think I'm near the end of the game now, and so far, tasting stuff has at best been no help, and at worst, killed me.
Is there anywhere that it is actually useful?

From what I played, in one of the houses there was a fridge. You use TASTE on the Orange Juice bottle inside the fridge and you can find a key in the container.
