So my power goes out for a few seconds and the game freezes up. I have to turn off my computer and turn it back on because ctrl alt del doesn't work. Afterwards I go to my character screen and my character's name is in red and when I click on him nothing happens. What can I do to restore my character if anything?

Assuming you are on Windows 7 or 8, the path on XP is slightly different.

First make sure Terraria is not running.

Go to the following Folder: C:\Users\<Your Username>\Documents\My Games\Terraria\Players
If you have not already done so globally, turn off "Hide extensions for known filetypes" in the Folder Options.

You should see a folder and two files for each of your Characters, a <Charname>.plr, and a <Charname>.plr.bak (two extensions, this is your backup file!)
Rename <Charname>.plr to <Charname>.plr.old or something like that, or move it to another folder, or (not really recommended) just delete it. Afterwards, remove the .bak extension from the other file.
Start Terraria and try to load your Character. If it still does not work, rename the <Charname> folder to something different, and try again. This will reset your minimap though.

You might have lost some stuff, but this should get your Character back. If your Worls have the same Problem, the solution is similar, just locate the corresponding files in the Worlds folder. Those will have <Worldname>.wld and <Worldname>.wld.bak as extensions.

I have a .plr and a plr.bad
No .plr.bak

I just realized one of my single player worlds won't load now..........

Hmm, i've never seen that .plr.bad extension.
Please look at the modified date. Which one is older? Are they both the same size? A working character file should be around 2 KB. (At least mine are)
I did a bit of digging, and it seems like getting hit with the .plr.bad thing is basically game over for that character unless you have a backup. It's also something that apparently only happens when your computer crashes while running Terraria.

Anyway, if you're on Windows 7 then this may help:

I'm running windows 8 and I don't see an option to check for previous version of files.

I gave up on my character and downloaded TSGE to edit the inventory of a new character.

My single player world save has a backup but I can't figure out how to use it. When I try to load the world it has a message that Terraria has stoppped working and then it closes.

Terraria should automatically be able to restore the world from backup it the primary file is damaged. I fear that something has gone very wrong during that crash...

Just to confirm: What world files do you currently have, and what size and file age are they?
