This is my resolution for ToME 1.5.3 not loading. I am running Windows 10 Creators Update with an nVidia GeForce 980 GTX video card.
If you have an nVidia GTX vido card installed, you might have the nVidia GeForce Experience program installed as well.
If you received the error as shown in the attached picture, and you have an nVidia GTX video card with the GeForce experience installed, updating the GeForce Experience program will probably solve the issue. It did for me.
I hope this fixes the problem for some of you out there, and saves you a couple of hours of troubleshooting.
Also on a side note, when logging in for the first time in the game, it will ask you to make an account and include the game serial key, which will give you some game tracking of some stats etc. at the Tales of Maj'Eyal web site. You can create an account at the web site and also redeem the serial key in a separate menu, or do it in the first game screen that pops up when you first start the game.
The GOG game serial key can currently only be found by logging in to the GOG web site, going in to your account library, click the down arrow icon in the game icon, select view downloads, click the more button, and go into the serial keys menu where you will find the 42 digit key. I'm not sure if all serial keys are 42 digits as mine was for this game.
