is there any way to get a cd key for this game? id like to register it with my steam account now that steam is selling it but i cant find the key anywhere

Not thru GOG. Its sold separately for GOG and Steam. You'll only get a Steam key if you buy it thru their website.
As far as I've learned, only the Witcher games allow you to have a Steam and GOG key on the same purchase. Every other game that both companies sell are sold individually. So yah, if you want a Steam key, you'd have to buy it again over there.
If you bought from GOG, why would you even need a Steam key?

There are many reasons why you would want to register your game with Steam, but let me be clear that you shouldn't need to provide a good reason to get the keys.

For example:
1. You may want to use Steam's update system to keep track of game updates
2. You may want to have the game listed on your profile and/or use steams social functions with the game
3. You may want to use Steam's overlay integrated into the game (this currently does not work with the GOG version)

These are just a few examples.
the game has no serial key, so no serial key can be obtained from anywhere. you should still be able to add the game to steam as a non-steam game, if you already own it.

1) no. Valve knows jack about System Shock - any future updates will come from systemshock.org, and will have to be installed by the user. and actually, the steam auto update system will probably interfere with this, unless disabled.
2) whatever
3) steam overlay works for all DX9 games, and therefore should also work for SS2 (unless you disable the DX9 renderer).

one thing you should always be aware of - with steam, you are adding one more layer of 3rdparty software that wasn't originally there, and that will always increase the risk of potential issues, no matter how much argument.

Umm. Ok. Still seems like a pointless request.

And a good reason for GOG to not give out Steam keys is that GOG would probably have to pay money to let you play their game on their competitor's service.

i like to register all of my games with steam so that they are in one place. i prefer steam over other digital distributors for several reasons: 1. i like their overlay, 2. every person i game with plays exclusively on steam, i have no friends that use gamefly, gog, etc, 3. steam is the first digital distributor ive used so its the one im the most familiar and comfortable with

for those of you talking about steam keys, i dont want a steam key. i want the cd key that comes with every physical purchase and that should come with a digital purchase too. this key you can also register with steam and have it associated with your account. if this game came out before the start of cd keys then i understand and i appreciate all of your replies. thank you
you cannot obtain what does not exist - System Shock2 never had any serial keys.
Even if the game came with a CD key, you still wouldn't be able to register it with Steam. There are only certain games you can do that with.

Never mind that SS2 was released 4 years before Steam even existed.
FTR, not EVERY single PC game had/has a CD or serial key, as noted by a few folks here. You may want to in the future Google or Bing up that info before creating a topic like this. just to keep you from wasting your time asking for something that never was available...

There are no set rules about games always having a "key" of some sort (many don't, physical or not) or those keys being always valid for a Steam registration... and it's not only because the game is old, or because is sold by GOG or anything; it just works on a case-by-case basis: some games allow this, some don't.

A list of games with Steam reedemable keys is available on the Support site, and you can notice that it's just a small subset of the entire catalog:
