I'm hearing people talk about the multiplayer option like it's easy to find. It's not present when I launch the game. I've heard that the sstool patches the game to the most recent version where the option should be present. I used the tool as directed in the stickied thread, but no dice. Is there a separate patch I need to use? Thanks!

The most recent version of sstool disable the multi by default because it's unstable.

When you run SS2tool during installation there is a screen where you select what you want to install. If you don't check the multiplayer (off by default) then it actually removes it from the game start screen.

Ya when you install SS2Tools v4.8 the installer has the option in it to check(cut on) or uncheck(cut off) multiplayer and it clearly warns that MP is sposedly bugridden as in its sposedly filled withem. So by default the installer has the MP option unchecked(cut off) so I would recommend reinstalling it and making sure its checked(cut on) for you to use it.

I have it on. My issue is no1 wants to play Coop with me.

I want to wait to try mulitplayer on it since it's my first time with the game and I'm hearing that the atmosphere the developers intended is a critical part of what makes it great.

One more question: I already installed (read: copied into the DataPermMods folder) the recommended mods in the sticky. Can I just reinstall SS2Tool on top of my current installation with no issues?

wait for ss2tool 5.0, then patch up (on top).
