Just as an FYI:

When I was launching (didn't matter if I was using the GOG launcher or Shock2.exe directly) the game was erroring out without letting me see the error message (I couldn't get it to capture focus). Looking in the Shock2.log I saw this:

Turns out in my multi-display I usually keep one of my monitors in portrait mode (for reading documents). Shock 2 doesn't like that. As soon as I switched that monitor back to landscape, it fired up, no problem.
