Thanks! I think I'm going to skip this one out for now as the game is working well for me out of the box. I will of course look more deeply into this stuff once it's time to explore the mods.

voodoo47: yes, it would definitely be possible to create a basic NewDark patch such as the one in this topic for both Thief games. T2 should pose no problem, however, the situation is a bit more complicated with T1 - as mentioned before, when using NewDark for the first game, we are essentially running T1 levels in the T2 engine. that means some things will work slightly differently - and while most players will not really notice things like small differences in AI sensitivity, some might not like it and complain - I did receive some heat from a couple of purist players when I have started to use NewDark in TFix. can't make all your users happy, I guess.

I still would recommend using NewDark for T1 as well - mainly because DDFix is at the end of its life/usability, and get's less compatible and more crashy with almost every new gpu driver release. the benefits (of using NewDark) simply outweigh the drawbacks.

will ask the GOG staff whether they are interested in switching both games to NewDark (in case they are reading this, they can also post here).
I definitely agree with this, or with Magmarock´s solution: to include NewDark for T1 just as an optional extra.

Ran into a problem w/ the patch. After I applied the GOG.com patch. It gave me two options. One is the exit tab and the other is Launch Game. I clicked Launch Game and nothing happens. Means the game won't run after applying the patch.

Also another thing. SS2 has "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" and the "Run as Administrator" checked under the Compatibility tab under Properties. Is this normal?
try rebooting your pc, and run shock2.exe directly. compatibility settings should not be required.
the basic NewDark patch for T1 has been created and submitted to GOG.
I installed this patch, even though I had these mods installed already:

This patch disabled new models and textures, but it is cool since I like the looks of it much more now. Things look actually scary now. My big concern is, did the patch mess up my gameplay as well? Is it possible that I am able to finish the game without any major problems?
repatch with ss2tool again and you should be ok.

btw, can you explain why did you patch your ss2tool patched install with the GOG update, even though it's the ONLY thing that you are NOT supposed to do? it's stated in the first, and in the second post as well. maybe I should go make it a bit more clear.

This seems to work, but the new models are back as well, so is there any way to disable them at this point? If not, I guess I am just going to start new game with fresh install. For a new start, would you recommend applying ss2tool and installing ADaoB, or staying with vanilla + gog patch?

GOG informed me on the front page that there is new patch available for ss2, so I downloaded and installed it. I did backup my game before applying the patch, but since the new patched version seemed to work fairly well for me, I kept playing on.
just select a mod combination that suits you - if you don't like some mod, don't use it.

as mentioned before, the patch is for those who are running an unmodified GOG version. ss2tool users already have the latest updates.
Alright, thanks for everything!

I unchecked the two "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" and "Run as Administrator" then applied the patch, clicked launch and it works! BTW is there a version number somewhere when it indicates before and after apply the patch somewhere?
the exe properties, can also be seen when alt-tabbed, or running windowed.

Gee, nice, thanks.
If GOG would reject it, could you post it here?
It would be appreciated.

Also, could you do the same for T2, or is it unnecessary (I haven´t installed the NewDark yet, is the installation for GOG T2 hassle-free - just copying and overwriting files?) ?

in case GOG rejects the patch, yes, I will probably post it, although it does not make much sense as a standalone patch - if you are willing to go the extra step and get a 3rdparty patch, you are probably better off downloading TFix.

unless you are on dial-up.

//yes, I will have a look and make a similar basic patch for T2 as well (the same thing applies - if it won't become part of the GOG build, you are probably better off getting TafferPatcher).

This won't break my save files, no?

Just making sure...
