What am I doing wrong?

I've deferred over to the GOG version of Superfrog after trying (and failing) many times on my Amiga to get across the big spike pit.

Asides from some weird-feeling physics on this version, I got used to it enough to get to the big spike pit... Only to not be able to flap across.

HELP!

And now I went and did it anyway! WHOOPS!
