I’ve received news of a possible sequel to Superfrog that may be in the offing, by fans for fans with Team17's blessing. Its creators have asked me to get the Superfrog community involved.

Since this is the best possible forum for doing so, I'd like the GOG community to share any ideas that might be helpful should such a remake be made! What do you like about Superfrog? What don't you like? What would you like to see?

Many thanks in advance if you do get involved! Visit my website</span> or e-mail me if you want to discuss this further - and apologies for spamming your forum, GOG!

1. Link is broken : )
2. I like it's 2D platformer. Absolutely no 3D please!

Thanks. Fixed!

I agree with you about the 2D. Pretty convinced a game like Superfrog wouldn't work in 3D. Mario 64 was an example of good 3D, but it hasn't aged well, whereas SMW has - the same can be said for Superfrog.

When I think about broken 3D, Earthworm Jim is the first thing that comes to my mind.
Do you have any ideas for the sequel? What kind of suggestions are you looking for?
Hi Pooka,

When you say "by fans for fans with Team17's blessing" does it mean that this will be a free game made by someone else than Team17?

Also, is this gonna be a remake or a sequel?
And where can I read more info about the project?

Well, I agree that should be 2D, not 3D... Same gameplay and same graphic style...

Thanks, Paulo
A bit more information - this was the e-mail I got:
Team17 has given my team an assignment of designing a 1 level SF game
remake - in order to test the waters for a proper remake.

We are going to be making this for the fans, so we need to get closer to
the fans.
I don't know anything else at this stage, but I'll be kept informed about this as things go along. There's also the possibility of playtesting early builds, and if there's any opportunity for that I'll publicise it.

I haven't asked Team17 about this yet; still garnering ideas from the community first, and then I'll pass them on to the developer.

Earthworm Jim 3D - what a disappointment that was...
Hi guys. I'm one of the designers on the project.
little more about ourselves and the project. Were a team of six at University, having approached Team 17 to help make a remake one level of a 90's game. We chose SuperFrog, and are currently accessing the art style. We aren't remaking the entire game, only to show what Superfrog would look like on a IOS. This is for a University project, we aren't working for Team 17.

It seems a lot of you don't like the idea of 3D. Why is that? What makes it so bad from going from 2D to 3D? We were thinking along the terms of 2.5D, so using a sprite for the main character with 3D backdrops. We want to keep the feel of Superfrog, so what memories do you have of playing the game?

We thank you for your time in helping us.

I think the reason for this is that the original Superfrog - arguably from the golden age of platform games - managed to muster a fast, slick feel without trying to do anything overly revolutionary with dimensions or graphics (apart from the scroller; very few people realise how well-realised the scroller is!). Some games trying to do things clever with 3D - like Donkey Kong Country Returns or the aforementioned EWJ 3D - tend to unintentionally sacrifice gameplay (or, let's face it, fun) in favour of being pretty to look at.

Genuinely good 3D games - actually good ones, like Super Mario 64 - are harder to come by than you'd think.

I like the idea of 2.5D though - in the same style as Super Smash Bros. Mêlée, perhaps. I think that would work as long as whatever you put in the background isn't too distracting. If the back layer is actually used - like in Paper Mario or several Virtual Boy games - that could also be very entertaining.
