What do the wooden pegs found in the throg part of the game do? Besides confounding me?

I have wondered this for over a decade if anyone can answer it my inner child will do a happy jigg (hey inner children don't care what other people think of them that part of what makes them so awsome).

There is a location to put a peg in a hole to open a door.
