I am once again tempted to get this since it's on sale, but I tend not to like real-time games in general and RTS in particular.

How does pausing work? Can you still do things like issue commands, view information, change the view, etc?

How does saving work? Can I save at any time, and expect a restore to return me to where I was?

Good news, it does not play at all like a RTS ;)
It’s actually much closer to what you would expect from a classic turn-based 4X.

Pause anytime, you can do everything during pause that you can do during passing time.

There is a regular autosave. You can save anytime you want, and restore the save in the exact status the game was when you saved it.
When loading a saved game, it is automatically paused so you can get a grasp of the situation before letting the time flow.

Full disclosure: I’m spending entire nights on this game lately, so as any addict I might not be fully objective about it ;)

By the way, don’t bother with paid DLC right now. The base game has enough content to play a lot of time without getting bored.

Thanks. That's good. I guess I'll get it then.

I'll get the Galxy Edition, but I guess I can wait for the other DLC until I've at least determined if I like the game or not. I am really tempted by the "Ancient Relics" one, though.

At the current price difference the Galaxy edition is worth it for the soundtrack alone ;)
More than five hours of sci-fi themed ambient music, if you’re into this kind of thing it’s really great.
