Version 0.728 added the following change:
UPDATED - INT EXP bonuses for the following skills: HACKING, FIRST AID, CRAFTING, REPAIR and SALVAGING
which has had a dramatic effect on skill acquisition for Repair, Crafting and Salvage. Using these skills after just gaining a level would result in a small experience increase. This would however increase dramatically as progress was made towards the next level, with the final use accounting for almost a quarter of the amount needed to gain the next level.
My character had around 100 Intelligence, and this change resulted in him gaining 6 levels of Salvage (from all the items picked up in a Research Station mission) whereas in previous versions, just one level would have been gained.
The variance in skill acquisition amount (tiny at the start of the level, huge before the end) suggests that this isn't intended behaviour. I would suggest that regardless, this is unbalancing (my Repair, Crafting and Salvage skills are all 100 now) and should be reconsidered.
