Startopia tutorials and the manual don't do a great job of explaining the intricacies of this game. However this guide does:

http://www.rakrent.com/rtsc/rtsc_startopia.htm

Enjoy.

I just found this a few days ago while trying to find any startopia site I could. Definitely helpful! I saved it so I could check the tech trees and biodeck information anytime I need it.

Thanks! I need this!
Thank you for posting this. I was on the fence about buying it, then looked at that site and was sold on it.
This is one of the best guides I've ever seen for any game. A must-read for newbies like me.
Thank you! It has been tough enough getting used to these older games which require you to actually read the manual (no tutorials in these older games) :P

It does get me to appreciate those tutorials nowadays!!
_Varyag_, as a newbie to the game, thanks indeed for the link to this guide!

I've had so many websites disappear on me lately, that I immediatey PDFified all the pages. ;-)

Looks like it may have gone so we may be looking for those pdfs soon.

I am just thinking about buying the gog version even though I own the original version as I never got round to playing it and I expect installing the gog version will be much easier than installing my cd version.
Yeah, that site doesn't seem to work ... but there's a backup at archive.org:

https://web.archive.org/web/20080811020803/http://www.rakrent.com/rtsc/rtsc_startopia.htm
Here's another helpful FAQ:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/342013-startopia/faqs/13140

I highly recommend a visit to this website as it contains plenty of useful downloads and information as well as a patched version of the old Mucky Foot website which includes the following 'StarTopia Gameplay FAQ' (presented in its entirety here):
How do I auction?

To auction something you first need to place it in your pattern buffer. Once it is there, right click on the cargo hold. At the bottom of the cargo hold panel is a red energy symbol flanked by chevrons. Either beam the goods you want to auction onto the energy symbol, or click and hold on the item in the pattern buffer and drag it onto the energy symbol.

How do I change decks?

There are multiple ways to change decks in Startopia, provided you are in a mission that allows use of more that the bottom deck (engineering). To move up a deck, press page up, or the number of the deck you require, or use the up arrow on the panel in the top left hand corner of your screen. To move down a deck, press page down, the number of the deck you require or the down arrow on the control panel.

Deck one is engineering
Deck two is entertainment
Deck three is Bio

How do I harvest my plants?

To harvest any plant on your Bio-Deck, simply right click the plant you want to harvest. If it is mature, it will be crated up instantly. If it still needs to grow some, you will see a green circle appear above it. When all of the circle has turned red, it will be crated up automatically. You can cancel a harvest order on any growing plant by simply right-clicking it again.

Remember to turn off the bio-deck controls to be able to do this! See below if you need help with this.

I can not pick up anything on the bio-deck!

When you have the bio-deck controls turned on, you will not be able to beam anything up or down on the bio-deck. You can turn the controls off by clicking on the symbol just above the bio-deck control arrows. If you want to turn them back on again, just select any of the bio-deck arrows.

How do I make muster points?

To place a muster point, right click and hold on any free piece of deck, within your territory, or in another's provided you have the doors open).

Left clicking the muster point will increase the priority it holds for you peeps.

Right clicking will decrease the pointxs priority.

Another sustained right-click on a muster point at bas priority will clear the muster point away.

You can have an unlimited number of muster points.

How do I find those darn bombs?

Saboteurs can place bombs on any deck of your station, so remember to check them all when hunting down a bomb. On the bio deck, the bomb is most likely to be by the lifts, or the door controls. On lower decks, the bombs may be by those, or at the corner of one of your facilities.

Security scuzzers will defuse bombs if they find them before you do if you have a well-manned security control, the security scuzzers will be able to find bombs at a longer range.

Remember bombs can be beamed into your pattern buffer. They will not explode while in the buffer, but if you hold one for long enough, it will explode when it is put down unless you put it somewhere safe...

I can not place a room!

Every time I click the crate I just get a picture of the crate with a red cross through it! Some room types can only be built on specific decks of your station. When you right click on crates for these rooms, if you are on the wrong deck you will see a large red cross through the crate interface. The easiest way to place rooms from crates is to right click on the deck you are on and select the hardplan option in the menu. This will give you a list of crates that you own that can be built on that deck.

As a rough rule, recreation buildings such as love nests, hotels and roulesse wheels need to be built on the entertainment deck (2) and industrial buildings such as factories, recyclers and cargo bays need to be built on the engineering deck (1).

The only building for the bio-deck (3) is the temple, which is automatically built by any Zedem monks you have hired. It is possible to put artwork on the bio-deck, but you need to build it on a lower deck and beam it into place.

Why are captured buildings unusable?

When you capture an enemies segment the defeated enemy turns the power off for all the rooms he is losing. So when you take control of his rooms you need to right click the rooms and toggle the power switch to turn them on again.

Why can't I attack the other station masters?

If you bring up the main managment screen then head to the final page of it (called overview) you will see your opponents in the bottom right corner. If you click on the opponents icon they will turn from friend to foe. You are then able to attack them. The enemy start at 100% foe but if a period of peace breaks out the percentage "foe" drops. If the percentage foe drops all the way to 0% then you become friends again (this will take a few minutes of peace).

Continuing a multiplayer game if someone drops out?

Yep the game should continue fine if some one quits out. However sometimes if their exit is not a clean one it can cause problems for the remaining players. To cure this tell everyone to quit out and then here are the steps you should follow:

Start a fresh multiplayer game with the same players as before. Make sure everyone has their save-games handy!

Once the new game has loaded, one player should go back to the Pause Menu and select Load Game, pick the Multiplayer save-game everyone wants to play, and click Load.

Everyone else in the game will receive a message asking them if they wish to restore a game. If everyone agrees, by clicking the green tick, then the game will be loaded

The Multiplayer host wants to quit can we play on?

Short answer is No. Long answer is No, but you will when the patch comes out. Currently if the host drops out the scripted side of the multiplayer game goes out the window.

What does XXXXXX do in the game?

You can access the Encyclopedia while playing the game by pressing F1 on the keyboard. This will give you information about whatever you are pointing at with the mouse: aliens, rooms, control buttons, menu items, and so on.

Backup seems to be dead. Anyone has it? It was one of my favorite things on the Internet.

Site says that they're in the process of transferring the guides (including Startopia) to a new website.

"The Magic Portal website (and its sibling Real Time Strategic Carnage [which might just be retitled Rakrent’s Tower – or something]) is currently in transition from their old host to WordPress. Stay tuned!"

Obviously, this process hasn't been as quick as the creator had hoped for.

Meanwhile, I've backed up his entire site on my hard drive. Rakrent went off-line in January of 2018 too. I contacted Lindsay over facebook, persuaded him to restore the site and I've made an extra copy ever since.

I'll see what I can do to share it when I get home.

Did you ever end up finding a way to share your copy? All the archive links for that site are broken and the new site hasn't been updated since you posted about it nearly a year ago. Thanks in advance for your help!
