Why on earth, would ANY game developer recent or past, have a save feature that if you're in trouble, makes you think you can exit the game without saving, only to find that when you come back to the game, such a choice corrupts your saved game, and you have to start ALL over. Whoever designed this should be hung by his balls with a switch to lower himself just out of arms reach. What a horrible, horrible, design. I spent hours building up my ship and crew, finally made it out of my star system, but realized I missed the new star system I was going to. No problem, I'll just exit without saving and reload my game. Nope. There is no saved game to load. Have to start over. Give me the rope. Let's hang this designer by his balls...if he's still alive.

I'm sorry to hear your experience. Way back in the day, you bought the game and read the manual. The manual is very clear on the issue.

The game came with two disks. They told you to immediately copy those disks and make those your master, then use the master to make another copy and that is your play. If you want to keep a saved state, then copy your play disks on another pair of floppy disks.

I had a shoebox full of Starflight saves. Over here, I just copy the directory.

Yes, it was a nuisance back in the PC-XT days. I remember my PC had a 20 MB HD on which to play, and I had a bunch of manually-created save folders.
yup these just hop into your starflight folder between play sessions and copy your save files (they'll be the ones with the recent modification dates) int oa zip or another folder. I use that trick with a bunch of evil old games.
