So I got Stardew Valley the other day and I'm loving it so far, but the problem is I can't seem to get access to the fishing, I suppose you could call it a mini-game of sorts, to catch fish. I get the exclamation mark and then nothing. From what I've seen on YouTube, once you get the exclamation mark, it then flashes the word 'Hit' on the screen and sends you to the little mini-game to catch the fish, but this isn't happening for me?

I have downloaded the latest version from GOG and tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, but that didn't work. Any help would be appreciated, as I think it is a lovely looking game with so much to do, and I am having so much fun with it, but it would be nice to have fishing as an option for something to do.

Are you hitting your mouse button when you see the word "HIT"?

That worked. I knew there must be a simple solution. Thank you for your help.

Be warned, fishing at first is REALLY REALLY hard. It takes a lot of practice but eventually you will get good at it.

You can also hit <C> to start reeling in, but you need the mouse for the mini-game anyway. You also need the mouse to cast further out in case you didn't realize.
I just wanted to say that at first I found fishing impossible and had sort of given up on it entirely for quite a while. I had even watched youtube videos, read wikis, etc. and was completely frustrated. However, I finally got into the enchanted forest area and found a pond with lots of very easy carp which allowed me to 'level up' in fishing and get a better pole. Just be patient - I think just trying to fish adds to your experience, and the new poles and eventually the tackle that you can add to the 3rd pole makes fishing actually fun.

Just posting this because I know I'm not the only one who had so much trouble with the fishing.
Fishing isn't the most profitable use of time, but the Energy cost is pretty low. It's a decent activity to weave in between errands when you happen to be in the area. On days when you clear, plow, or plant, you can fish for a relatively low amount of energy to build fishing experience.

The learning curve goes harshly against the grain. By the time you're any good at the mini-game, it's gotten easier because of your character level-ups. It would be nice if they made the difficulty depend a lot more on the particular fish, with the big game being harder to get to in the first place. But that isn't how it happened.
I caught one fish out of maybe a hundred hits, and don't know how I managed that one, because usually I wasn't even close. I was so bad at it that I checked online documentation a few times, thinking I had to be doing something wrong. I finally went to the small pond on my farm and pulled out trash until I went up to level 2. That allowed crab pots and bait, so I used those until I advanced to level 3. Now I can catch carp in the mountain pond, at least.
There's also an Easier Fishing Mod at the official forum. I haven't tried it yet, but if you want to check it out, it's at https://community.playstarbound.com/resources/easier-fishing-standalone-1-1.4226/. You have to be a member there to download stuff, but membership is free.
