I haven't seen many posts for this game and not much regarding updates or patches.

So with the release of the new game from them, I thought about trying the 1st one before deciding on the 2nd one. (I'm a huge fan of Starsector, Escape Velocity Nova, Endless Sky, etc. to name a few)

With so little info, I'm hesitant to buy the 1st game. Anyone know if the game has been updated and bug free? (at least no game-breaking bugs)

The game received one patch, version 1.0.13c, that fixed a few bugs exclusive to the GOG version, "introduced by implementing GOG achievements." So at least some of the bugs posted in this forum have been fixed. The GOG version is based on the most current Steam version, patch 1.0.12, so at the very least we aren't missing any bug-fixes. This also infers that there are no (known) horrendous game breaking bugs, otherwise an emergency Steam patch would have been a necessity.
Having said that, to answer your question, no, the game is not bug-free. For example, see this Steam report. But you should be able to both play and complete the game.

I love these types of games, but hate to get frustrated lol.. Since the game can be played and completed, I guess the bugs are mostly minor. Good to know. :)

I've played through Nexus twice and loved every minute of it. I didn't personally encounter any of the bugs mentioned in the link here. I remember having a little trouble finding a few of the rarer things, but I might have cheated by opening the save file in a text editor and looking up their location directly.
