My wife loves the game... so much so that she built a rather large town. Unfortunately, we've had to name it lag town because it moves so slowly now. It baffles my mind that a game with 2D pixel graphics would slow down due to a busy town, but that seems to be where we are at. Has anyone else had this issue? Anyone found a workaround? It's ruining the game for her. :(

In farting around with it, I can get a LOT better performance if a dramatically reduce the resolution. It also improves as I move away from her town. Oddly enough, there aren't a lot of NPCs there, but maybe it's the torches and whatnot. Again, this seems silly given that it's a 2D game being played on a decent gaming computer. Thouughts?

It's not just you. Sadly, the game is poorly optimized. I had similar issues on my ship when playing it below 1080p on my old Phenom II X4 @ 2.4GHz with 8GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 460 because I have so much stuff on it. I'm currently playing it at 1080p on a 8-core Ryzen 7 3800X @ 4GHz with 64GB RAM and a Radeon RX 590 and it still chugs every now and then on certain planets when fully zoomed out. I suggest keeping the zoom somewhere in the middle in addition to lowering your resolution.
Oh, and the 64 bit version has a memory leak, just FYI.
Unfortunately Starbound was the developers first game. There were a number of choices made that were not optimal. As previous people stated there were a number of areas that were not optimized and a very bad memory leak. It is not the graphics, it is how the game calls and presents the graphics as well as other choices made. It is why other developers even over multiple years have been unable to make the game available on x-box. They have been through multiple and from what they have said these developers threw up their hand in disgust and walked away from the game after seeing the state that the code was in.

So is there a version where there isnt a memory leak?

I found that a lot of the stuttering is caused by how the game constantly autosaves. I found that installing on a solid state drive makes it much more playable. I also found that some mods have really improved how the game plays. I play frackin universe and I've been able to play for 3 or 4 hours with little or no stuttering. This is on a 64 bit machine, but they have rewritten a ton of the coding
Thanks for the info.

Could you tell me your pc specs?

Anyone else have info of their experience?

Seriously install the game on a solid state drive. The constant autosaves are what are causing the majority of the stuttering. It is much faster on a SSD.
