Hi people,
The recent release of X-Wing here on GoG and the XWVM-project inspired me to do this in Blender:
http://abload.de/img/x-winglogorendermithi12urv.png

This is a preliminary render of the X-Wing logo, which I've rebuilt from scratch (except for the free-to-use metal texture).
This is meant for people doing fan-projects based on X-Wing.
So I'd be happy to have some constructive criticism for this render.

1. Letters need more contrast and shadowing around them. You can't really read it from the background slab.
2. Set smooth lighting so you don't see the shaded flat faces (the 'G' in particular)
3. The blue border is misaligned in the middle on the left and right side.
4. Why are there random dotted lines?

Study the original well. The slab itself is a lot thinner too, and the letters are a slightly different color, texture, and sheen to ensure their readability and make them visually pop out more.

1. Hmmm... would it also work if I darkened either the plate or the letters?
2. Yes, the G has been especially troubling for me. I'll see if I can do that in Blender.
3. That shouldn't be a big problem.
4. You mean on the background? Those are meant to be stars. I attempted to mimick the original starfield.
Edit: Wait, I see what you mean now. I haven't noticed those and I have no idea how they ended up on the render.
Edit 2: Thanks for the link. However, I'm more going after the version which was used on the boxes, manuals and jewel cases: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_X-Wing#mediaviewer/File:X-Wing_-_Space_Combat_Simulator_%28box_cover%29.jpg

1. The blue outline needs to be "carved" into the metal plate, like sunken into it. I have no idea about 3d work, but in Photoshop the easy way of doing it would be using the "bevel and emboss" layer style.

2. That brushed metal texture needs to be a lot smaller to look like metal, those "brush strokes" this thick, look almost like black and white wood texture. It's easy to do your own texture, just google "brushed metal photoshop tutorial".

3. That metal plate is kind of flat looking. You need to add highlights and darker areas to make it shine.

4. Also the plate is kind of heavy looking, the original is much thinner which gives it a somewhat more distinguished look.

EDIT: 5. Oh, one last thing, that starfield doesn't look very realistic. It's looks like a bunch of dots on a black background, if that is what you are going for, great, but if not, maybe you want to add some foggy nebulae thingy in the background for an easy fix, or you could do a tutorial like this (just scroll down to the start of the tutorial and ignore the TLDR part): http://gallery.artofgregmartin.com/tuts_arts/making_a_star_field.html

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I've made some improvements already, like making the the plate thinner.
However, I need to figure out a few things in Blender, before I'm able to implement the other suggestions you made.

The reasons those dotted lines are in the first render are because I used Blender's OpenGL render, which rendered the dotted lines from the lightsources on the logo.
I'm currently trying to use Blender's standard render. However, I am unable to render the textures on the model despites having materials for each object. I hope that I'll figure out how to do it.
I'm using Blender 2.8 by the way.

After two years, I've decided to give the X-Wing logo another go and I've come up with this:

With box art colors:

https://abload.de/thumb/x-winglogosilverwip3h69qkc.png[/img]

With intro colors:

Personally, I'm very happy with how they've turned out. So I will release the source files for you to play with soon.
I'm considering rebuilding the logos of the successor games as well.

Edit:
The logo has just been released:
