Hey guys,

Has anyone managed to beat this mission? I cannot figure out how to do it for the life of me. If I follow the transport, GUNs make minced meat out of me with missiles, if I ignore the transport, imperial transports destroy it in a second and to top it all my wingmen ignore my orders and destroy disabled GUNs. Any help is welcome.

P.S.
As far as I can see in original X-wing GUNs didn't fire missiles in this mission, so is this a bug of some kind?

True that. But walkthrough is for 1993. version, 1998. version has gunboats firing missiles at you, and in a Y-wing it's impossible to dodge the damn things.

Hit space, find the missile, and shoot it down.

Hit space, cut the throttle and use single fire laser cannons.
I just got past this mission. It was a doozy. It probably took 10 attempts.

Firstly, I am playing on the 1994 CDROM version, and I'm pretty sure the transports didn't fire missiles or torpedoes, just lasers.

Obviously, once Transport Omicron is captured, you need to pounce on the enemy transports ASAP. They are the main threat.

The Gunboats will try to dissuade you with missiles, but it is possible to evade missiles in a Y-Wing. You want to make sure your speed is at least 75, which greatly increases your chances of success, so make the necessary power adjustments as quickly as you can.

Maneuver so that the missile is approaching perpendicular to you (put the yellow sensor dot on the edge of the circular sensor screen). Once the missile shoots past, maneuver so that the missile is directly in front of you, and follow it. As long as you stay here, within its turning radius, it can't hit you, so you can now adjust your power settings as you like. You can try to shoot it, but (at least in this version of the game) they are difficult to hit, and I always just feel like I'm wasting laser energy.

Stay close to Transport Omicron until it is safe, even if that means breaking off from combat -- it is easy to get engrossed in a dogfight, and drift too far away to defend it.
Okay, just hit this one again myself.

Actual way to make this mission easy relies on the fact that you're flying a Y-Wing. The transports that hyper in to attack Omicron 1 (the one you have to save) come in one at a time. That is, each enters when the previous is destroyed. Destroyed.

Well, you've got those handy-dandy ion cannons sitting on top of your cockpit, why don't you use them?

Disable the first one, and then go defend yourself against the admittedly many and annoying missile-spamming gunboats. Omicron 1 should have a clear run to the frigate at that point.
One strategy when it comes to escort missions is to figure out which enemies are exclusively attacking the target and hit them with a torpedo or ion blast. Ignore anything attacking you, unless killing them makes it easier for you. One thing I hate more than anything is when your wingmen kill targets you wanted disabled... they take away the kill from you and then a new group respawns to take its place. If only they were as effective at launching torpedoes at big targets, instead of killing themselves by moving to point blank range...
