... without having to hold a button like the manual says? I'm using a MadCatz V1 Joystick and it works perfectly, even the throttle axis. But unfortunately I haven't figured out how to roll with the unused twist axis, or even how to change rolling for yawing and vice-versa.
I too was trying to figure out how to roll but no luck.

When looking at the key assignments it seems that ALT-3 should allow you to roll, but it didn't work for me.

I have an X-45 and and would love to map rolling to a specific button.
I personally have found that the default Roll button is Joystick 2

But what button (keystroke) does that translate to? The reason for this is so that I can map that keystroke to a specific button on my flight stick.

If mapping from the ingame options menu it's ALT-3, just keep flipping through the pages and you can find it. The keybinding system ingame is kinda wonky to navigate but once you get used to it you can get it to do what you need it to.

Edit: I don't know how mapping it works on your software, but on the Saitek X52 it doesn't seem to work properly.

Yup I tried ALT-3. First by pressing ALT-3 and moving side to side but with no success. Then tried mapping it as well and still no success.

In Tie Fighter, I found that I could roll when holding down the right mouse button; which performs the lock on/target action (keyboard t)

It should be a case of binding that to a button on your stick. My Cyborg Eco may've done that automatically.
